A victim of the gambling mania
committed suicide in Portland
the other day giving as a reason
that he had overdrawn his account
at the bank and had lost the money
at the Portland gambling tables
He asked, as a last request, that
the gamblers refund the money he
had lost to his wife in order that
ehe would b able to clear up the
matter at the bank. It has been
customary in Portland for some
time to require the gamblers to re
fund money to the wives of men who
lost whenever the woman interest
ed m tda a complaint about it but
it ia a question whether such a pre
cedent is a good one. Every time
a weak minded man loses money to
a gambling table which should
have gone to the support of his fam
ily and that money is refunded to
the man's wife, it encourages sun
dry other weak creatures to stake
their mite, in the hope of beating
the gambler, because they will rea
son that if they lose perhaps their
wives can get the money, or part of
it refunded. When two men 6it
down at a gambling table each ex
pects to beat the other and when
the professional wins (as he gener
ally does) and is forced to refund
the money it looks like pretty good
evidence that the game is looked
upon as not square or that gam
bling is in itself a crime. If either
or both of these pr opositions are
true it would look better on the
part of the Portland authorities
to suppress the evil altogether
rather than to license it and then
force the gambler to refund in cer
tain cases.
