l TO 77 DEMOCRATS.
The republicans did not nomin
ate Mr. T.G Johnson for sheriff last
Saturday as tu.uy perso ns suppos
ed they ruighi do and it was good
politics for them to leave vacant
that place on the ticket. The mem
bers of the convention no doubt
figured that if they were to- nom
inate him it might cost him some
Totes in the democratic camp and
as they felt confidant that the dem
ocrats will be accomodating enough
to give htm the nomination and
teveral rotes it would perhaps have
fceeo unwise - for . his republican
friends io have jeapordiaed his
chances by any radical action.
Political maneuvers of this charac
ter are generally most successful
hn allowed to slip along in the
gool old fashioied way and the re
publican leaders no doubt realiied
that fact Now if the democrats
should happen to tumble to the fact
that the republicans are trying to
'use" them for the purpose of
'nominati ng the republican choice
for sheriff of Gilliam county and if
the democrats should object so
strenuously to such combination
as to nominate a democrat for
sheriff and turn Mr. Johnson down
it would make, to a disinterested
spectator on the outside, a very
ludicrous and arousing situation.
The proposition is up to the demo
crats. It is in their power to have
some fun at the expense of their
old time political rvals and if they
fail to take advantage of it it will
- look like an admission of one of two
propositionseither they are play
ing into the hands of the republi
cans or else they feel that they are
"shy" of requisite brains and abili
ty among men of known democrat
ic proclivities to fill the office.
The businesslike methods which
Judge Bradshaw has always applied
to the court business of this district,
the absolute fairnes and justness of
his decisions and the interest he
has always shown in ths welfare
of the taxpayers in keeping down
expenses and pushing through the
businss of the court are the prin-
-uiarity in the district and for the
fact that so far no opposition to his
nomination and election has been
developed. The indications at this
time are that Judge Bradshaw will
bo renominated and elected with
practically no opposition.

JAPAN AND RUSSIA.
The value of a navy is over-rated.
Naval victories are not deci
sive in combats for territory, not
withstanding Actium and Armada.
The final result of a war depend.-
on the relative resources of the
combatants in men and supplier.
If the Russo-Japanese war is fought
as a duel, without outside inter
ference, it will result as most wars
do, in a compromise, with Russia
in the advantage. One of the
most interesting results will ha the
arousing of China. She has mil
lions of men with good Tartar
blood in them, and if aroused into
a military nation she will undertake
to settle a great many questions
herself. I cannot understand why
Americans should have much sym
pathy with either Russia or Japan.
Japan is seeking to subdue and
conquer country of the Koreans,
and Russia id seeking toxubdueand
govern the country of the Manchu
rians, and war m to the world in
general just ab iut as bsnt-ficial as
the Baltimore fire has been to the
United States. War is destruction
and the soldier and the sailor are
parasites upon the body of indus
try. C. E. S. Wood in the Pacific
Monthly.
A Thoughtful Man.
M. M. Austin, of Winchester, Ind.,
It new what to do in the hour of need.
His wife had such an unusual case of
stomach and iiver trouble, physicians
con Id not help her. He thought of n I
tried Dr. King's Kew Life Tills and she
got rwliff at once aud was finally cured.

billof$l(X),030 fr work oil the
Celilo canal project will be gtod
news to Eastern Oregon. This plan
is due to the joint eflortsof Tong
and Moody who secured1 the au
thorisation of the canal as a con
tinuing work, in the last river and
harbor bill, repealing the portage
road proposition. The engineers
made their estimates of the amount
at present necessary for the prose
cution of the canal and this amount
is included as a mater of course in
the sundry civil bill. The accept
ance by the state of the proposi
tion of the engineering department
that the state procure the right of
way, has put the project beyond
future controversy.
Robbed the Grave.
A- startling incident ia narrated by
John Oliver, of Philadelphia, as follows:
"I was in an awful condition. My skin
was almost yellow, eyes snnken. tongue
coated, pain continwlly in buck and
sides, no appetite, growing weaker day
by day. Three physicians had given me
up. Then I was advised to ose Electric
Bitters ; to iny ureal Jay, th 8rst bottle
mude a decided improvement. I con
tinned their use for three weeks, and am
now a well man I they robed the grave
of another victim." No one should fail
to try them.
