7 RAILROAD OUTLOOK.

am county were never aoprouming
ax at present. With three compan
ies in tbe field, each one declaring
that they will eurtly build a road
from Arlington to Condon, and
that thy will commence work in
the immediate future, the outlook
is certainly favorable. It amounts
to a moral certainty that only on
of these companies will finally do
businefs here, therefore the ques
tion of moat interest to the people
just now is: Which one will ulti
mately win but in the game and
build the road?
Assuming thai all three of the
companies are acting in gwd faith
and that they each eipect t build
the road it may interest'.!, g to
consider briefly their status, far
as it is known, what they have ao
far accomplished and their appar
ent ability to prosecute the work
to a successful issue.
The company represented by Mr.
Morris and his associates, who are
now in Condon, has, we are inform
ed, secured the survey and
right of way acquired by Elrod A
Moore, two years ago. They admit
their inability to build the road
without the support and assistance
of the people of this county but do
not ask for any subsidy or dona
ton. They ask the people of this
county, however, to subscribe for a
certain amount of the' company's
bondsagreeing to redeem the same
within five years with sii per cent
interest added. They have, as yet.
no traffic arrange rueut with the
O, R.&N.
The company of which Messrs
Findlay and Simmons are the head
was incorporated about a year ago.
They have made a partial prelimi
nary survey of the route with 6ome
estimates of cost of construction.
Their representative visited New
York la6t Summer and the report
is current here that their project
lias been satisfactorily financed by
New York capitalists and that
all that is now holding them back
from active work on the line is the
lack of satisfactory traffic arrange
with the O. R. & N. These gentle
menTbl re liotTyet - indicated what
concessions, if any, they will de
mand from the people of this coun
ty. The third company, that of
which John C. Ainsworth, of Port
land, is president, was organized
about two mouths ago. . Associated
with Mr.' Ainsworth Jn. this project
are Lewis Gerlinsjer and Henry F.
Conner, and all these gentlemen
staud hi gh in business and finan
cial circles of Portland. They have
as yet done no work in the field
but th3 fact of their having satis
factory traffic arrangements with
the O. R. & N. givegr them some ad
vantage iu the game. These gen
tlemen declare that tbey will build
and that they will do so without
one dollar in subsidies from the
people of this county.
Now, the qu estion is, which com
pany will build the road? This pa
percannot answer that question au
thoritatively just now. It's like the
old game the children used to play:
