and robbed it surrounded by an
admiring aiidiencn of citizens and

they got safely away. This show

EASTERX H HE A T CROP.
The estimates of the Eastern
. wheat crop, made by crop expert
V. B. Snow, of the agricultural de
partment, are not encouraging. The
ringer ot the agricultural depart
inent is on the wheat crop of the
United States from the day the
seed is covered in the ground until
it return? to the granaries, a golden
stream. Therefore the estimates
made by the department are about
far as thrashing has progress
ed in the Eastern states, the aver
age is very low. In fact the crop
ii a disappointment to the experts
and the farmers who have been in
close touch with the situation.
Tue heavy str.-tvr and the thrifty
appearance of the crops led to the
b :i f tint the Central states would
yield an average crop. Such is not
the case. In the Middle West,
where the great. bulk of the Atueri-
cu nhet . vrup grove, tim yied
is lower than for several year.
Threshing results to date have
been received covering operations
of from one to a half dozen ma
chines from widely scattered sec
lions and the showing is significant
In Putnam county, Indiana, the
average to date is nine bushels; in
Illinois, Marion county shows five
bushels; Clay five to 15; in Iowa,
Hamilton county gives 12 bushels;
Clinton seven to 11; while Marion
CKinty.Missjuri, shows eight to 11
bushels.
Portions of Kansas and Xebras
ka are failing to make good early
promise, but generally speaking
the yields in these states are satis
factory. It is apparent that in
ppiteofan increase of more than
2,000,000 acres in area harvested,
the winter wheat crop will be little
if any larger than last year. East

PEACE, If HEN THERE IS A'O
AEACE.
Apropos of the discussion now
going on in the press all over the
country, relative to the cause and
cure of the horrible crimes which
so frequently of late have led to
the lynching and burning and Hay
ng of criminals, north a id south,
the fulJuiving somewhat out of the
ordinary but not altogether illogi
cal view of the matter from an ex
change may be of interest:
'"Danville, Illinois, has just re
enacted the Evausville, Indiana,
butchery. Twenty-one people were
shot by the sheriff while attempt
ing to storm the jail and lynch a
colored rapist. The crowd had just
lynched and buried a Negro. Yes,
capitalism produces conditions that
are lovely indeed! There is always
a cause for every effect. In view of
the many killings and burnings of
Negroes for unmentionable erimes,
is it not well that we look into the
. matter from a historical standpoint
ud see if there is not something
wrong. At the close of the war an
Atlanta, Ga , newspaper printed
this:
'Tfre have Ween f.iir years of war in
which ihu fcjunlherii white men Imvp
i-8Clicaliv all Ieeii in tin-Hriny. Tli a

Why this change? Vby wa
the colored man tractable and
faithful then and not now? The '
fame question applies to me wuue
man. The increase of crime amoti
the white citizens is junt aa great
as among the colored. Why? There
must be something in the changed
social conditions that produces this
effect. The concentration of wealth
and power in fewer and fewer hands
the lessening of opportunities to
rise from the ranks of labor, the
corruptionin official life, the flaunt
ing of stolen wealth in the facet of
the despoiled, the longing for a part
of the richness of life which their
toil makes jwssible, the uncertain
ty of the means of life all these
are at the bottom of the increase
in crime. There, will be no change
in the strife until the causes for it
are removed.. Why foolishly cry
"peace" when there is no peace.
