A fellow by the name of Cowgill,
at Baker City, who makes his liv
ing by fawning on railroad mag
nates, publishes in the Baker Dem
ocrat an article in which he accuses
the Oregonian of "hammering Har
rinian" and of "hounding his move
ments in the Northwest." The
Oregonian has expressed a very
earnest desire that Oregon shall
not forever be neglected in the op
erations of the great railway syn
dtcate of which Mr. Uarnuoan is
the head. No part of the Uuion
Pacific system is more profitable
than the O. R. & N.; and the Oreg
onian would like to Mr. Harri-
inan do something for the develop
ment of the newer parts of this
country, which are without rail
roads and can't make another step
of progress till railroads are assur
ed. To the north of as a great rail
way combination is making im
mense efforts for development of the
com try7and extension Tofcommerce
to tbesouth of us another great
railway corabinitation is doing a
like thing. The system to the
north of us merely touches Oregon;
no more. The one to the south of
us covers Oregon and the great
valley of the Columbia. But it
ceased years and years ago to give
Oregon and the country of the
great Columbia Valley new facili
ties. It sits on this vast empire,
and has done so these twenty years.
The Oregonian would be glad to see
it stirred1 into action.
This is the reason why the Ore
gonian has spoken so earnestly.
The fello v Cowgill asks: "Is there
not something behind these attacks
on Harrirran and may they not be
the very meant of making him slow
in moving in Oregon?" Yes there is
something behind the criticisms of
the Oregonian. That something is
its earnest desire to get something
done in this state, commensurable
with what has been done in the
States of California and Washing
ton. Small danger either that the
management of the railroads here
will "be made slower iu its move
n erits in Oregon" than it has been.
There is the whole Eastern Oregon
country. There is the whole
..Northwestern , Oregon country.
There is the whole " Southwestern
country. Into these great regions
only the Union Pacific-Southern
Pacific combination can make en
trance or get footing. And there
' is the great Snake River and Clear
water country which the Union &
cific has allowed itself to be bluffed
out of as it has been hitherto out of
the Nehalem and coast country. It
is just as well, as the Oregonian
humbly conceives, to speak plainly
about these things. The notion
that criticism might "make the
movement slow" is worth a leather
medal. "Slow"indeed! Pity, indeed,
if in the matter of opening and de
veloping Oregon somebody should
be irritated to a point of slowness!

Now and then someone ventures
to declare that a newspaper man
usually finds an easy way into pol
itics. He must of necessity become
informed on political questions and
he learns the byways and methods
of practical politics. The versality
of newspaper work qualifies the
newspaper man for a career in pol
itics, say these writers. The news
paper man bows and says thank
you but he smiles at the innocence
of the man of compliments.
There is one thing the pleasant
scribbler forgot to mention. That
is that the newspaper man learns
to observe. He finds men without
a principle they would not sacri
fice cheaply. He comes in contact
with men whose promise is water
aud whose friendship is mercenary
and vanishing. He sees men in
politics who are not qualified to
guard a penny bank instead of the
intersts of many people. He sees
men in "bossdom" and among
leaders who trample ruthlessly be
neath their feet the sacred rights of
the men who vote for them, and
rather than to seek political "dis
honor" the newspaper man prefers
a higher position of exposing politi
cal il'ioViunvi - and poltrtcaV shsnre
and 'gnorance. Garfield once told
a young man never to seek a posi
tion that he was not more than big
enough to fill, and he might have
told him not to leave it until he
had filled it well The greatest
evils in our political life is that
too many men of insufficient abili
ty are selected to fill our offices.
Nominations are too often made
with regard to politcal pull, locali-
cality the control of a few votes,
etc., and the duties of the office are
not considered. The most practi
cal results should be able men in
office, and newspapers should be
independent enough to "show up"
inefficiency and corruption. No
newspaper fills its mission that is
not loyal to the people and no
newspaper succeeds that does not
remain true to the common reader.

Excursion Steamer T. J. Potter
goes Into service June 27.
Those who are planning their vacation
this year will be interested in knowing
that the popular excursion steamer, the
T. J. Potter, qneen of river boats go
into service J one 27, and that she will
leave Portland, dnring the season, every
day from Tuesday until Saturday inclu
sive. To see the beauties of the pict
nreeqne and mighty Columbia from the
decks of the Potter is a treat never to be
forgotten. For speed and grace nothing
in river or lake service in the entire
West equals this side-wheeled beaty.
Five hours from Portland and one from
Astoria, through the famous fishing wa
ters of the Columbia, past scores of sal
mon traps and nets and as many white
winged fish boats, lands the passengers
at Hwaco, where close connection is
made for beach points with trains of the
Ilwaco Railway St Nav gation Co, whose
cars stand on the wharf awaiting the
steamer. The beach is 27 miles Ions
two hundred yards wide at low tide, and
a mark. It is an ideal place for driving
riding wheeling or walking and the surf
bathing is unsurpassable. The excellent
hotels and boarding houses provide good
accommodation at prices ranging from
one dollar to three dollars per day.
The round trip rate from Portland to
Astoria is $2.50; to Ocean Beach points
$4.00, good until October 15ih. On
Saturdays, during July ami August,
round trip tickets are sold to beach
points at $2.50, good for return leaving
the beach the following Sunday even
ing.
