Portland Tsicr"-'
Bishop rotter, on his arrival'
yesterday at New York from Loti
on, expressed surprise that the
anthracite miners' strike ha not
yet been Bettled amF he is reported
assaying:,
"The anthracite ccal operators
have all along maintained , a false
position. TUcy tate the stand th.it
they will not deal with the organt
istions, but insist on dealing with
the men as individuals. Now this
i all wrong. Any body of men
whose interests am common have
the right fo organize into an asso
ciation for mutual protection and
are entitled to recognition as an or
ganization in matters which affect
their individual aud combined in
terests."
Bishop Potter's sympathies
might naturally be supposed to
run iu the direction of wealth and
in fovar of the men who possess
great wealth and combine it for
o -----
business purposes, but he perceives
and declares that in refusing to
recognize and treat with the anions
the mine operators-are doing wrong,
and taking a position that cannot
be approved or defended.
The Atlanta News voices the pre
vailing sentiment of the American
people in this matter when it says:
In tire beginning of the present
great tie-up in the anthracite Gelds
the affair wore only a commercial
aspect, and wearing such, it held
no interest fo the Nation at large
beyond that attached to the possi
bility of a higher price for fuel, or
that aroused by sympathy with
one side or the other.
"When, however, the owners and
operators of the mines declined to
arbitrate the demands of the min
ers, things took on a dtfferentlook.
For the refusal, in its last analysis,
was nothing more or less than the
refusal of the old Northumberland
Earl to let his yeomantry lay their
complainta before him, and held
exactly the same significance.
"The issue between liberty and
peonage 6till hangs in the balance,
and may not be settled for many 1
days. And in the meantime still
another phase has developed from
the situation the suffering of an
innocent and -unconcerned third
party. That a handful of power
ful men should be permitted to in
flict grave inconvenience, to say
the least, upon the sovereign peo
ple, without a protest, is a strange
travesty, when Justice stands with
poised scale, ready and anxious to
serve all parties. '
"Of what eood is civilization if
those who wish may ignore its in
stitutions, and what is the next
step we may expect on the part of
the powerful few if the present at
tempted step by them is success
fully taken?"
