TIIE MACIHAE If POLITICS.
The Simon machine is rui.in
things with a high hand in Mult-
nomah county lately and the indi
kH-
cations point to a continued war in
are Simon heelers and when the- ofexistence; and in the fight aga inst
matter of appointing judges and.th lobby and it methods no
rlerks for the coming primaries
tame up for consideration they
proceeded to scoop the whole works.
Th Oreroniai and Telegram are
Y.vXh plain spoken in denouncing
the work of the machine and the j
decent element of all classes of citi
t ens are up in arms. The wo rk of
machine politicians in Oregon is
not confined to Multnomah county
but permeates the political fabric
of every county in . the Btate to a
greater or less degree and it is to be
hoped that this movement, looking!
to the overthrow of the machine,
whieh started in Portland, will
ppread to every eounty in the state.
Every machine man, every ringster,
now holding a state or county office
no matter what bis political affilia
tions, should be assisted down and
eut of the political arena at the
next election.
J. J. Hill is said to . be nego
tiating for the government trans
ports now plying between San Fran
cisco and the Philippines and as
?oou as the deal is closed will con
trol and operate that branch of the
government service. What's the
matter with selling out the whole
United States to Uncle Jim and be
done with it? It would save trou
ble to close the matter up in one
deal and we might offer to "throw
in" the Philippines for gocd meas
ure. ' . '
What's the matter with the win
ter poets? During the present
cold snap not a single original?
poem, entitled "Beautiful Snow,"
has been received at this office for
GOVERNOR McBRIDE VS THE
RAILROADS.
Gover nor McBride of Washing
ton has declared himself as beiDg
btrongly opposed to the big railroad
trust which is being formed by the
Great Northern and Northern Pa
cific companies under the name of
the Northern Securities Company.
The governor's statement on this
subject is somewhat sensational to
say the least and will make inter
esting reading for the railroad lobby
ites and trust promoters. He urges
thu rratinri of a Stat.fi railroad com
mission, clothed with full power to
regulate and control railroad rates
in that state and the enlargement
of the powers of the inter-state com
merce commission to such a degree
as to give it absolute power over
inter-state rates.
He also declares that the corrupt
railroad lobby which has so long
dictated legislation at Olympia
must be stamped out of existence.
On this subject he says:
"If the railroads see fit to charge
exhorbitant rates, the people are
helpless. In the absence of legisla
tion the courts, of the state can af
ford them no releif. Of course it is
viaiujcu, ju ueimu ui iue wttungerts
of these railroads, that they are act
uated by the best motives, and that
their rule is, in reality, a beneficent
rule. "But when we reflect "upon
the methods resorted to through the
medium of an insolent and corrupt
railroad lobby, to uphold their be
neficent sway and to suppress all
legislation in tbe interest of the
people, we have a right to dis
trust these pretentions.
''In my judgment the people of
the stateuhould say to the railroads:
We will treat you with absolute
fairness, but you shall not, through
your political Hessians, control con-

We desire not to hamper you in your

quarter will be asked or given."
The governor fails, how aver, to
tell the people how to go to-work to
stamp out the lobby and this part
of the program will be found no
small job. State control of railway
rates is a long step toward govern
ment ownership of the railroads and
it looks more and more as though
the railroad magnates themselves
are preparing the way for just such
a condition in the not distant future.
"Some time ago my daughter caught a
severe cold. She complained of paina in
her cheft and hud abadcoogh. I gave
herCham her laoB Cough Remedy accord
ing to directions and in two data she as
well and able to go to school. I have
used this remedy in my family for the
past seven rears and have never known
it to fail," says James Prendergast, mer
chant, Annato Bay, West India Islands.
The pains in the chest indicated an ap
proaching attach of pneumonia, which
as no doabt wared off by Chamberlaiu's
Cough Remedy. It counteracts any
teudency of a cold toward pneumonia.

CRATER LAKE FOREST RE
SERVE. .
An effort is being made to have
Crater Lake, which is located at the
summit of the Cascade range in
Klamath county, Oregon, set apart
as a national park. The lake is
one of the great natural wonders of
the world. It is about six miles in
diameter and is nearly surrounded
by perpendicular walls from 1,000
to 2,000 feet high. The water is
2,000 feet deep. In the center of
the lake is circular island, or cinder
cone 845 feet high in the top of
which . is an extinct crater 90 feet
deep. The surrounding country is
rugged and of no value for agricul
tural purposes.
Congressman Tongue has intro
duced a bill in CongTess to have the
lake set apart as a natural park and
a strong effort is being made by lov
ers of nature to have the same be
come a law. .

THE POLITICAL BOSS.
Every member of a political ma
chine, from the bejeweled, well
dressed boss down to the most de
graded repeater at a primary, is in
politics for money.
Wben any man says he is in
polit'cs, as a business, simply be
cause he likes the game, he insults
the intelligence of every man to
whom he makes the assertion.
When a man makes politics his
sole business, and either joins or
organizes a political ring for the
absolute control of public affairs,
he is in it simply as a means of liv
lihood. He is worse than a pauper
for he robs the public while the

The , frost fog made it appearance
about a week ago and has bees pretty
busy advancing and retreating up and

Revs. Tonkins, Law son, and Brown

R. M. Johnson is the only man In this

privilege of holding frth insklt the city
limits of this no man's town but the sly
old fan maker just fooled them by giving
a little side abow to a full house at the
Baptist church after preaching services
Wednesday evening passing the hat
around for tbe benefit of himself and
Rev. Tonkins. The collection was about
four dollars.
Morgan Ward is in the Pendleton neigh

a bunch of horses that it said to have
been driven out of hereabout 10 days ago.
No word bat been received from him yet.
Ed Wineland started out the first of
the week as advance agent for the DeMoss
Concert Co. Hiscontract is for six weeks
and the troupe will take in all the towns
between here and Walla Walla. Our
town boys say that when Ed started out
he had a show bill pasted on the bottom
of each of bis No. IS shoes and bis feet
resting high op on the dash board of bis
buggy so one coultf easily read the bills
a long way off but a stranger would be
puzzled to tell what was behind them
even at short range.

A cold wave struck this locality last

Pullman Ordinary Sleepers
The tourist travel between the East
and the racifie Coast has reached enor
mous proportions in the last few years,
and calls for a special class of equipment.
To meet this demand the Pullman Co.
has issued from its shops what it tech
nically calls the "Pullman Ordinary
Sleeper," These cars appear similar to
the regular sleepers being built on the
same plan, but not furnished with the
same elegance. They are equipped with
mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows,
pillow-cases, towels, combs, bruslws,
ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to
be furnished by tbe passenger. Each
car has a stoe for making tea and coffee
and doing "light housekeeping", and
each sectioucan befitted with au adjust
able table. A uniformed porter accom
panies each car, his business being to
make up berths ; keep the car clean , and
look after the wants and comforts of the
passengers. In each ot the trains which
are dispatched daily from Portland by
the O. R. & i. Co. is to be found ona
of these "Pullman Ordinary Sleepers".
The car attached to the "Chicago-Portland
Special" goes through to Chicego
without change, and the one in the
"Atlantic Express" runs to Kansas City
without change. Passengers in tbis car
for Chicago change to a similar carat
Granger.
Much of the first class travel is being
carried in these cars, tbe rates being
lower, and tbe service nearly eqnat to
that in the palace sleepers.
