It is the fashion now for all the
Oregon newspapers to get oS daily
or weekly "spiels' about the heat
stricken East followed by an ar

this week, however, even at the
risk of being out of the fashion
because it is too darned . hot to

WB JPier Johnpont Morgan
Began his dazzling career as the
promoter and organFzerof big trusts
and combines he is said to have
stated that a- beneficent result of
sucb organizations- would be the

troubles from the industrial life of
the country. In the -light of cur
rent events in the labor world Pier

mighty poor prophet
THE SAN FRANCISCO
STRIKE.
This strike, it will be 6een, grows
ut of a deeply conceived determi
nation on the part of the workmen
and of their unions to have their
ay and to enforce their will where
evertbe interests of labor are con
cerned; and,, oa the other hand, it
proceeds-floe a resolute purpose
en the part of the employing class
to resist what it calls interference
with its affairs. But how a fight
between such forces gets started
signifies little, since it is- not the
mere incident of the hour which
wakes grievance, but the grievance
which calls forth the incident. In
this case the employes of a- draying
eompany operated with union men
refused to haul merchandise pro
duced by nonunion labor, and when
given the choice of doing the work
required or quitting their employ
ment they chose the latter. Upon
the principle here involved the
fight at San Francisco rages fierce
ly. Its first efiect is an almost
complete tie-up of shipping, paraly
sis of industry and consequent
stagnation of general busineus. It
comes at a time when the fruit sea

Capitalistic combination through
out the country, which during the
past year or two has been proceed
ing at a rate never before witnessed,
or even imagined .greatly stimulates
the organization of labor unions
amd strengthens the resolution of
their members. It cannot but be
expected1 that these great combina
tions of capitat will be attended or
followed by closer and wider organ
ization of the working people of the
country. A consequence of corpo
rate organization of capital on so
vast a scale is the loss of touch and
sympathy between employers and
employes. Elimination of sympa
thy and conscience on the part of
the employer a- consequence of
corporate and trust control is fol
lowed by hostile organization on
the part of the working people. It
is a deplorable 6trife, for which
there!? no present remedy. But
they who have organized, cr are
striving to organize, all industrial
operations under direction of a few,
have no right to be surprised at
the growing disposition of the
working people to meet organiza
tion with organization. Oregonian.

School Fund Apportionment.
State Treasurer Charles R. Moore ha
just made the annual apportionment of
the interest of the irreducible school
fund, received on loans on account of
that fond daring the past year The to
tal number of school children in the
etate is 133,818, and the lain of money
apportioned among them is $165,697.06,
being $1.22 per capita.
This apportionment is smaller than
either of the two in 1899 or 1900. One
reasos for the reduction is the lower
rate of interest charged on the school
fond notes now, the rate having been
reduced from 8 to 6 per cent, by the leg
islature ; another is the fact that daring
the past two years a great many accu
mulated interest payme nta were receiv
ed, after the bant tiroes of the hist half
decade, while daring the past 12 months
practically no deferred payments have
been made.

Pullman Ordinary Sleepers
The tourist travel between the East
and the Pacific Coast has reached enor
mous proportions in the last few years,
and calls for a special class of equipment.
To meet this demand the Pullman Co.
has issued from its shops what it tech
nically calls the'TuIlman Ordinary
Sleeper." These cars appear similar to
the regular sleepers being built on the
same plan, but not furnished with the
same eletcance. They are equipped with
mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows,
pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes,
ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to
be furnished by the passenger. Each
car has a stove for making tea and coffee
and doing "light housekeeping", and
each section can befitted with an adjust
able table. A uniformed porter accom
panies each car, bis business being to
make op berths; keep the car clean, and
look after the wants and comforts of the
passengers. In each of the trains which
are dispotcbed daily from Portland by
the 0. R. & X. Co. is to be found one
of these "Pullman Ordinary Sleepers".
The car attached to the "Chicago-Portland
Special" goes throngh to Chit-ego
without change, and the one in the
"Atlantic Express" runs to Kansas City
without change, Passengers in this car
for Chicago change to a similar carat
Granger.
Much of the first class travel is being
carried ia these cars, the rates being
lower, an the service nearly eual to
that in the- palace sleepers.
