Commenting on the reported in
tentions of certain Eastern news
paper men to establish a new
morning paper in Portland in op
position to the Oregonian the
Spokane Spokesman-Review says:
" In 20 years repeated efforts
1 have been made by Eastern news
paper men to establish new papers
in Northwestern cities, Failure
has attended every effort. This
was was not because our people
were clannish, but because the pro
moters brought to the effort an in
sufficient equipment, both of means
and knowledge. They mistook for
public sentiment the buzzing of a
few disappointed politicians and
the complainings of a small num
ber of other citizens who had real
or fancied grievances and imagin
ed the owners of the new paper
would take an enthusiastic inter
est in helping to redress them.
The result invariably has been
mutual disappointment. . Io most
instances, the owners of the new
paper discovered that it was not
politic to dress old wounds every
morning, even if they had the time
to squander on individual com
plainings. In a great majority of
cases the complaining citizens for
got their old grievances in the cul-
tiavtion of new ones against the
new t paper, and instead of going
out to hunt up subscribers, went on
the warpath against the new ven

By a plan recently adopted by
the poetoffice department many
farmers and others in tha Inland
E npire may be Baved their regular
trips to country post offices. The
idea is in the delivery of mail along
all "star" postal routes. The
department has conducted a series
of experiments in different sections,
the result of which have been
satisfactory.
Under the new system mail
carriers on star routes are allowed
to deliver mail from the pouches as
they pass from one office to another
it being a modification of the rural
delivery plan. The system has

PROTECTIVE TARIFF.
A great many republican papers
are advocating a revision of the
tarUT; among them the Salt Lake
Tribune. It looks as if, before a
(great white, the taritf will cease to
be a party isue. As public senti
ment is drifting, Americans will be
about unatiimoss on the proposition
that the great American industries,
now so well established that they
can successfully compete with all
the world, need no protection, and
that to give it to them, or rather
continue it, is merely giving them
the power to charge their country
men prices away above reasonable
profit, and much higher than the
prices fixed for the same goods sold
to foreign countries. The tariff has
wonderfully helped to make these
industries what they are, and they
are no longer, "infants," but con
quering giants, theold arguments
in favor of protective tariff are
without force, and in the face of
present conditions naturally con
vince the average American of
nothing but their absolute absur
dity. Dealing with this question
of a tariff as a protective measure,
the Tribune says:
"Our thought is that the tariff
should be revised and removed
from very many articles of Ameri
can manufacture, like steel rails
and steel structural work and
plenty of other articles. Idaho

Pullman Ordinary Sleepers
The tourist travel between the East
and the Pacific Coast has reached enor
mous proportions in the last few years,
and calls for a special class of equipment.
To meet this demand the Pullman Co.
has issued from its shops what it tech
nically calls the'Tollrnan Ordinary
Sleeper." These cars appear similar to
the regular sleepers being built on the
same plan, but not furnished with the
same elegance. They are equipped with
mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows,
pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes,
ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to
be furnished by the passenger. Each
car has a stove for making tea and coffee
and doing "light housekeeping", and
each sectioucan befitted with an adjust
able table. A uniformed porter accom
panies each car, his business being to
make up berths ; keep the car clean, and
look after the wants and comforts of the
passengers. In each of the trains which
are dispatched daily from Portland by
the O. K. & N. Co. is to be found one
of these "Pullman Ordinary Sleepers".
The car attached to the "Chicago-Port
land Special" goes through to Chicego
without change, and the one in the
"Atlantic Express" runs to Kansas City
without change. Passengers in this car
for Chicago change to a similar ear at
Granger. .
Much of the first class travel is being
carried in these cars, the rates being
lower, and the service nearly equal to
that in the palace sleepers.

turned to his home in Ferry Canyon.

week are: Hazel Fitzwater, Elsie Brown,
Nellie and Esther Hallenbeck.
The fourth grade have finished their
work in Language and Physiology and
will soon review both branches.
Miss Naomi Stengel visited in both
