Springatontfc Rogers, the enterprising
liverymen, are living on the ahady tldo

lately had a new hay track, pully and
fork placed in their barn and, when the
hay pile guts low, all they have to do is
to drive a load of hay alongside the east
end of the barn and the new contraption
does the rest. The arrangement Is a
complete success and the members of

ing. Henry Fletcher, jf Walla Walla, is
here visiting his brother, 8. 1). Fletcher,
and his mother. Mr. Fletcher has been
in Alaska during the past summer in
the government service, and thinks he
will return to that country in the spring,

tory for the republican party. McKln-

"To the News i I send the following
recipe from a California correspondent
which Is snld to be unfailing as a pre
ventive add cure for the dreaded con
tagion smallpox i
" 'I herewith append a roclpo which
has boon usnd to my knowledge in
hundreds of caws of smallpox. It will
prevent, or cure, though the pittings
are Oiling. When Jciinor discovered
the cow-pox in England 'the woild of
science overwhelmed him with fame,
lint when the most scientific reboot of
medicine In the world, that of Paris,
published this recipe it passed unheeded,
It ia as unfailing as fate; and conquers
in every instance. It will also cure
scarlet fovor. Here is the recipe as I
have used it to cars smallpox: Sulphate
of zinc, one grain; digitalis, one grain;
sugar, one-half tcaspoonful. Dissolve
in a wiue-glasa of soft water or water
which has been boiled and cooled. Take
a tcaspoonful every hour. Either small
pox or scarlet fever will disappear In
twelve hour. For children the dose
must lie diminished according to the
age. II countries would coinpol tueir
physicians to use this treatment there
would be no need of pest houses. If you
value your life use this recipe.' "
Ex-Sheriff Sanderson Back.
Arlington Independent.
Ed Sanderson, a former and well
known old settler ot Gilliam county,
arrived In Arlington Tuesday, direct
from Capo Nome, where he has been
Ince last July. He came down on the
steamer South Portland. Mr. Sanderson
said ho did lots of prospecting and min
ing but aside from the experience of the
tripigt very little pay for it. "I do not
mean (oiltf that the trip did not pay
mo, fur I feel well paid in experience.
There Is little change for a man to do
much there now. Everything la taken
and there Is no chance for a man to even
rtako out a claim, and chances for a man
to go there and do anything in business
are very slim. But I expect 1 shall re
turn," continued Mr. Sanderson. "But
man has chances there that be don't
horo, but I'll tell you, be pays for all
that ne gets, too. I mot Harve Condon
up thore. He took sheep np which he
sold for 1-0 per head and then lost mon
ey on them. It cost him $10 a head to
pay the freight on them. Harve and I
prospected together. It has been ten
ears since I left this county. I was
the first and only republican sheriff of
Gilliam county. Wilcox defeated me for
sheriff ten year ago." Mr. Sanderson
says that every kind of machinery im
aginable is to be seen in the Cape Nome
country. Hundreds of abandoned ideas
in machinery are to be sect) .in that
country, and many are atrewn along the
beach covered with sand. Hi borne is
now In Gilroy, Cat. He will remain
here a few days before returning to his
home in California.
