ence were Leung Chi Tso and Leung
Kal Tin. Leuug Kal Tin was tbe young
er brother, but equally clever for bla
years, and an ardent reformer.
Wheu jealousy made It Imperative
that the young Emperor have less fre
queut counsels with Kaug Yu Wei It
was decided to couflue their Intercourse
to letters and to ha ve.tueso 'missives
carried to aud fro by' some trusted
friend of reform. Leuug Kal Tin was
one of those who bravely offered his
services for this delicate and danger
ous task.
When the Emperor saw that bts re
formers bad endangered bis own safe
ty and that of his advisers, aud that
matters were nearlng a crisis, be sent
a secret message to Kwang Yu Wet, In
forming him of the peril that was
threatening all reformers. He bade
them fly at ouce.
Six of tbe most promising advocates
of reform were butchered at the Insti
gation of the Empress Dowager before
they could make their escape, but Kang
Yu Wei, Leung Kal Tin, Leung Cbl
Tso, and several others managed to es
cape.
Leung Kal Tin came to tbe Pacific
coast to carry the doctrine of reform
to every city and village where bla
brother . Chinese congregate. In San
Francisco there are an especially large
number of progressive Chinese, who
believe that the light of modern clvlll-
latioa should penetrate tbe gloom of
China. Tbetr battle err Is: "Give back
the throne to the young Emperor
Kwang Hsu." They would have the
Empress Dowager divested of every
vestige of power.
