A Narrow Escape.
Martin Van Blarlcon hod a narrow
OHcape from death during tho storjn
Monday evening) in Ferry Canyon. . lie
was on bis way borne from work and
when noar the sohool bouse, got off hit
horse to lead him over a place in the
wire fence where the wire was down.
Van had just stepped across the wire
and was In the act of leading the horse
over, when a bolt of lightning struck the
animal, killing him instantly. Van was
knocked senseless, but recovered in a
short time and was soon able to make
his way home. He thinks the thunder
bolt was following the wire, as he says
it seemed as though he could see the
flash for some distance on the fence an
Innttttit before the horse was struck. A
deep gash was found In the animal's
forehead, where he thinks the lightning
struck him.

When John fcbriver's cayuse mare
suddenly lumped from under him down
on Main street some two months ago
and broke bis collar bone, John lost no
time In disposing of the valuable animal
to Frod Wilson. Fred treated the mare
klndlv and fed her well until last Sun
day, when he thought to take a ride.
No sooner was he in the saddle than the

Teachers' Institute
. Ihn annual Teachers' Institute, which
convened Monday morning, fiuished its
work yesterday and adjourned.
The meeting was both pleasant and
profitable to the teachers, as well as to
the large number of visitors who were
present at the different sessions.
State School Superintendent Acker
man and 1'rol. 1). W. Jarvls conducted
the work of Infraction, the program
being based on the new courne of study
as adopted by the State Board of Educa
tion, Both gentlemen are thorough
and competent instructors and the work,
as demonstrated by them, was at once
entertaining and instructive.

and Jarvls lectured in Armory ball to a
larite and appreciative audience, l'rof.
Ackerman is an ardent advocate of
progress and reform in educational work
and his remarks were along that line,
while Prof. Jarvis choseashis subjwet
"The Education of Women," which be
handled in an able and interesting man
ner. After the lectures a reception was
tendered Superintendent Ackerman and
the teachers by the ladies of Condon
and a pleasant bour was passed in a
social manner. Miss Harriet Yoder, an
accomollshed you nit musician, favored
those present with some excellent music
during the course of the evening, which
was highly appreciated.
The Institute has beeen highly suc
cessful and County Superintendent
Meal is to be congratulated on having
arranged aud managed the affair in so
able a manner.
The Instructors left fof Fossil last
evening to attend the Wheeler county
institute, which is now in session.

A sudden death occurred at tho Con
don hotel last Thursday evening. Sam'l
Huling, a saddler, who arrived in town
Tuesday to work for John Kelsachor,
was taken HI Thursday morning and
expired at 8 o'clock P.M. on the same
day. But little can be learned of the
history of deceased further than that be

Shooting In Sherman County.
On Friday last there was a serious
shooting scrape on the Higginbothatn
place, 5 miles north of Uras Valley, be
tween O. P. Iliggtnbotham ana Mr.
Junkin. who has the Mireinbotham
place rented. Junkin bad Just moved
into the field, when Higginbotham drove
nn with sacks and told Mr. junktnto
put half the grain in bis sacks. This,
Mr. Junkin refused to do, and soon one
word brouzht on another, when Higgin
botbatn shot Juukin in the left side just
below the heart, and turning around
took a shot at one of Junkln's sons, the
ball cutting through his panlaand shirt.
By this time all was excitement around
tlie machine, at the other men thought
their time would come next. Higgin
botham left the field and went tn Moro
and gave himself up to the proper au
thorities. Medical aid was at once sum
moned. Dr. Hartley, of Moro, arriving
at the scene first, closely followed by
Dr. Taylor, of Grass Valley, and Dr.
Beers, of Wasco, in tha order named
The doctors were nnablo to locate tho
ball, and on Saturday morning Junkin
was taken to one of tho Portland hospi
