Vancouver Iron and Big Oregon Company are
the Current Talk This Week.
VANCOUVER IRON PROPERTY.
Pennsylvania Mea Said to Be Buying
for Development.
Seattle, July 18. The Post Intelli
gencer states that managers of the
McKeesport iron works, in Pennsyl
vania, have been visiting the Pacific
ooast, and have secured sites for new
iron works at Port Angeles, after an
unsuccessful attempt to locate in Vic
toria, B. O. The belief is expressed
that the iron deposits of Vancouver
inland have attracted the attention of
these iron men and that raw iron will
be taken from Barclay sound, and else
where in the island, down to Port An
geles for working. It is known that
the McKeesport iron men have secured
options on three properties in the Barc
lay sound country, namely the Ander
son Company, another owned by Wil
on, Braden, Irving and others, and a
third the property of Thompson, Bra
den, Logan and Kains. An option has
been secured on these claims until the
end of the year, and before the begin
ning of next month between 400 and
600 men will be taken up to Barclay
sound to exploit its mineral wealth.
If development proves that these
properties are at all equal their prom
ise, it will mean ranch for Vancouver
island and for Victoria. The proper
ties in question run about 72 per cent
in pig iron, a very high per ceutage,
and one which envoked enthusiastic
expressions from the visiting magnates.
From these the raw material for the
Port Angeles foundries will be drawn.
The Galena, one of the premising
claims on the Gordon river, passed re
cently under bond to a number of East
ern capitalists. Active work will com
mence on this mine on August 1 and
will be continued .until the end of the
year. : A large sum is involved id this
transaction should it go through.

Oreenood, B. C, July 18. The own

much work must be made before the
first payment is made. The Hard Cash
U a fractional claim, containing 23
acres, adjoining the Golden Crown,
Winnipeg and the J. and K. The lat
ter claim is owned by John Rodgers,
and he recently uncovered a ledge on
the property near the Hard Cash line.
He, therefore, secured tbe Haid Cash
that both claims might be worked to
gether.

Loomis, Wash., July 6. In the
Palmer mountain tunnel the last 80
feet driven has gone through a forma
tion highly mineralized, giving assays
each day running from f 3.74 to 37 in

into a well defined ledge, . showing
much blue quarts full of mineral which
may prove one of the most important
in the history of the tunnel. This
ledge is in different formation from
that of tbe other 22 and tbe good values
pieceeding tbe cuttings of tbe foot wall
make the crossing and testing of this

Gold Mining la British Celasabla.
The first authenticated discovery ol
gold in British Columbia, according to
Dr. G. M. Dawson, occurred at Mitch
ell or Gold Harbor, on the west coast
of Queen Charlotte island, in 1851, a
nugget weighing several ounces having
been accidentally picked up by an
Indian woman on the seashore. This
nupget was brought to Fort Simpson,
and, coming into the possession of the
officer in charge of the Hudson Bay
Company's post at that place, was for
ivttrded by him to the company's head
quarters at Victoria. An expedition
was at once fitted out, and, proceeding
to the spot, succeeded in locating a
quarts vein seven inches wide, "report
ed to contain 25 per cent gold in some
places." Tbe find was worked for
some months and then abandoned, the
i narrow vein ' entirely giving out; no
other indications of mineral were aver
found on the island, notwithstanding
that this extraordinary little seam ol
quarts had yielded in a few weeks it
was worked a value of 20.000 on tbe
word of one aathority, or 975,000 oo
that of another. About the same time
coal, which haJ been discovered on
Vancouver island as far back as 1835,
Iiegan to be mined in earnest at Kanai
mo. .

THE DULL SEASON.
Railway earnings Are Good, However,
and Business Failures Few.
Brndtareote' says: Business is unus
ually dnll at this season, and this rear
no exception to the general rule la re
marked. A teview of the past six
months, however, gives little comfort
to pessimsts. Bank clearings, it is
true, are smaller by about 11 pr cent
than they were in the first half of 1899,
but railway earnings are about 10 per
cent larger, and business failures,as re
ported to Bradstreet's, are the fewest
reported for 18 years back, with liabil
ities of failing trades tbe same, with
one exception, and that last jear, since
1892. Winter whest has about all
been harvested tn tbe Southwest and
the yield tbere has been very large.
Copious tains in the Northwest, too,
have apparently worked some Improve
ment, judging from the more cheerful
tone of advices received from thenoe
this week. 1
Wool is dnll and manufacturers, are
supplying only actual wants.
In manufacturing lines dullness and
weakness are most marked In products
of iron and steel.
The settlement of labor troubles is
ejected in the better demand for build
ing materials at affected centers, while
rains in the Northwest have allowed
white pine manufacturers to open their
works, aud give employment to many
thousands of men. '
Sugar has been marked up again this
week, coffee is higher, while tea holds
the full advance scored on the outbreak
of the Chinese troubles. Wheat, in
cluding flour, shipments for the aggre
gate 8.018.832 bushels, against 8,184,
144 bushels last week.
Business failures in the United States
(or the week number 196, as compared

A BUSINESS VESTRYMAN.

who did not think a two-thousand-dollar
man could afford to allow a fifteen-hundred-dollar
man to do his work.
"Harper's Drawer" tells how tbe cler

side of his calling.
. Some years ago, In one of my parish

friend. In the neighborhood lived a
clerical brother, an excellent apd popu

pulpits. His salary was fifteen hun

was two thousand dollars, with a simi

One very hot summer, not being tn
good health, I exchanged several times
with him, so as to save preparing ser

of my restryman to have a chat with
him, which be opened as follows:
"You have lately exchanged a good

Man today begins life in a garden ot
innocence and purity, wherein are tbe
dlvinest possibilities, but where there
is also the subtle spirit awaiting the
