ELECTIONS 6'A' s YEARS.
At the presidential election tf
132-1, the first of wliwh reord .is i
kept of the popular v..u ilrewere ,
four candidates. And-cv Jackson j
feceived 155.872 votes, John Q Ad-i
..... i :
is, lOrvVil, V iihuni J 1 t.r uvto-u
4LC16'2 and Henry Clay 4d,54
But if this cotitest there were no
recognized parties, na conventions
and no platforms: the electiou de
generated into a personal contest.
In 1828 Jackson and John Quin
cy Adams w ere the only candidates
l.r president, l our years later j
Jackson and Clay. In 1836 Martin j
Van Duren and William Henry
llarrreon were the only candidates.
Iu the campaign of 1840 the abo
litionists held a liberty party con
vention and cast 7059 votes for
James G. Birney, of New York.
Harrison and Van Buren were the
other candidates. In 1844 Polk
and Clay w ere the chief candidates
Birney was again the nominee of
the liberty party and received
C2.300 votes.
At the election of . 1848 Taylor
and Cass divided the great bulk of
the popular vote, but Van Bureri,
as the candidate of the free soil
convention, polled 291,263 votes.
Four years later the free soil vote
went to John P. Hale and fell to
153,143 Franklin Pierce was the
democratic candidate and Winfield
Scott the Whig.
In 1856 the republican1 party
came into the field with a strong
organization, and tor the first time
since 1824 there was a substantial
division, of the popular vote between
more than two candidates..
In 18G0 four candidates divided
the vote and as a result of the split
in the democratic party Lincoln
became president, the war was pre
cipitated, the union preserved and
the black man freed. These terrific
issues so cemented party factioas
and obliterated minor differences
that the election of 1864 fonn d on-
Iv two candidates in the field Lin
coln and McClellan. In 1868
Grant and Seymour were the only
candidates.
In 1872 Grant and Greely divid
ed the popular vote, save for a
slight diversion of 29,489 votes to
O'Connor, nominee of the labor re
form convention, and a smaller
diversion of 5008 votes to Black,
prohibition candidate.
In 1870 the popular vote was di
vided among four candidates. The
democracy cast 4,284,757 votes for
Tilden; the republicans threw
4,033,950 votes to Hayes; the
greenback vote of 81,740 went to
Peter Cooper; and the prohibition
ists ca3t 9522 votes for Smith.
At the election of 1880 the green
back vote was thrown to Weaver
and increased to 308,578. Neal
Dow was the prohibition candidate
but figured only in the "scattering '
column
In 1884 the greenback vote fell
to 175,870, and Benjamin F. Butler
was the nominee. The prohibition
vote was thrown to John P.St John
and increased to 150,369
In 1888 the popular vote was
substantially divided between
Cleveland and Harrison. Streator
nominee of the union labor'conven
tion, received 186,836 votes and
Fisk, the prohibition nominee, poll
ed 246,875.
In 1892 the popular vote showed
greater division than since 1800.
Weaver, populist candidate, receiv
ed 1,041,028 votes
In 189(5," the popular vote was
. divided substantially between Mc
Kinley and Bryan 7,10c,199 for
the former, G,02,G85for the latter.
Palmer, gold democrat, was sup
ported by 132,871 votes and Lev
ering, the prohibition candidate,
' mustered 131,757. :;,'
At New York Monday,;' notice
was issued by the Consolidated Gas
company that on June 20 the price
of gas would be advanced from 65
cents to f 1.05 per 1000 feet. The
Associated Press telegram that
brings this news also brings the
explanation. ''The gas companies
of Xew York have been brought u fi
ller the control of the Standard Oil
company."
' This demolishes the defense put
npby the trust supporters, that the
real tvrpotw and th real effect of
t!irt trtistti is to bring nioreeconoisi
ic methods to bear in manufacture,
and thus while f lightly increasing
the profits of the trust, provide the
consumers with 'eheye'r'ncesaries.
That defense is a shaW, and it is
amazing that any one' could be
found to believe it. No one ever
heard the promoters of ft trust of
fering their securities ot thnt theo
ry. When they have bonds to float
and stocks to market, the argument
is advanced that the trust will cou-

ditinns. This is an age of invention
a:d rapid cheapening of the cost
of production. Prices of all manu
factured articles have been falling
for a generation. The aim of the
trusts is to control the markets,
arrest the natural fall in prices, and
make enormous profits. Tobelitve

Fine Cattle.
V. O. "Minor, the well known cattle
man of Ileppner, ia perhaps the proud
est stockman in Eastern Oregon at the
present writing, He hastt light to be.
Mr. Minor owns the finest herd of Short
horn cattle in the state, in which he has
invested a large amount of money dur
ing the past few years but it remained
for him to cap. the climax by a recent
purchase which made him the owner of
the beet Shorthorn cow in America.
Hie purchase was made in Indiana and
included the champion cow and a year
ling beifer calf. The animals arrived
in Arlington last Saturday night from
the East. The cow cost Mr. Minor
$1750. and the beifer cost him $450, be
sides freight charges. The cow weighs
2300 pounds and the yearling looks as
heavy as the ordinary fullgrown Eastern
Oregon cow. Mr. Minor is an enthusi
astic admirer of the Shorthorn breed of
cattle and hopes some day to be the
owner of the best herd of that breed in
America. . '
