In a recent issue the Arlington Record devotes considerable space in an attempt to convince the vo ters of Gilliam county that they hould vote for,' and elect, P. L. Main, the republican nominee for sheriff. The only reason advanced by the Record for this position is lhat V. L. Wilcox, the present in Hiiubunt of the oOice and the dem Kjralic nominee, has held the ittlice 12 years. The Record admits lhat Mr. Wilcox is a "uood man" and does not attempt to deny but i hat he has given universal satis faction as an official and has always been faithful and true in the dis charge of his duties. It would ap pear to us that the Record has made a mistake. In calling atten tion to Mr. Wilcox's continued ser vice in the sheriff's office it but emnhasixe8 the high esteem in which he is held by the people. No question has ever been raised as to the neat and orderlv manner in which the business of the office is conducted, while in his dealings with the people Mr. Wilcox has ever been found courteous and obliging. The Record will find that an appeal to blind partisan ship will have but little weight with the intelligent voters of uuli am county. They have been too long accustomed to marking their own ballots to respond to party ap peals in this year of grace, or to relish being named for any Individ ual simply because they exercise their right to vote for the man rather than the party in county affairs. ., - Democratic Ticket.- STATE. mm Mn-lV, M. Smith, of Baker City, candidate for congress in this dis trict on the democratic ticket, was here Saturday getting acquainted with the voters. It was expected that Mr. Smith would speak here daring the campaign, but his visit at that time was rather unexpected, the local managers of the campaign not having had sufficient notice to properly advertise bis coming. Al r, Smith is a pleasant gentleman, an entertaining talker on political questions and makes a good im pression wherever he goes. He at present represents tbe people ot nis district in the state senate and was the recognised leader of the minori ty at the last session, where his ability and integrity won the nigh est esteem and respect of his fellow members without regard to politics. His record as a fighter of "grafts" and "boodling" in the senate chamber is well known and it is safe to say that if he is elected to congress he will be found, in season and out of season, looking out for the best interests of the people of his district and of the whole coun try as against the big corporations and boodlers who are known to in- est the national capitol. Prof. W. R. Neal, democratic candidate for school superintendent is out from -Arlington this week looking after his interests in the campaign, i rot. Jteal has the sup port of practically every teacher in the county, which is one of the best assurances needed that be will be elected. He has been identified with educational work all his life and will continue to be bo engaged until the finish, and, the teachers say, that is the kind of a man whom they want to direct the school work of uuliam county. Who will say the teachers do not know what they are talking about? We learn from the East Oregon- lan that Mr. Henry Crass, of Ar lingtou, passed the required exam' ination before the supreme court, at ' Pendleton, last week, and was admitted to practice law. It is to be presumed that Mr. Crass will now retire from Bcbool work, in which he has been engaged for the past three years, and take up .the more lucrative profession of law. Mr. Crass is at nresent an aspirant for the office of county school sup erintendent, but the weight of opin ion among the voters is that that important office should be filled by an experienced teacher and one who expects to continue in that profession. " It is with a good deal of pleasure and satisfaction that I recommend Cham berlain's Colic, Cholera, an I Diarrhoea Remedy," say Druggist A. V. Bawtelle ot Hartford, uonn. A lady ensfomer, teeing the remedy exposed for sale in my liow case, said to me: 'I really believe that medicine caved my life the past cumuier while at the shore,' and she be came eo enthusiastic over its merits thot I at once made no my mind to recom mend it in the future. Recently a geO' tleman came into my store so overcome with colie pains that he sank at once to the floor. The Oregonian a few days ago made the following editorial statement: The average man does'nt care to be instructed beyond tbe knowledge that helps him to make one dollar two; tbe average man wonld rather swallow a miracle, read a wonder book, be amnseo or astonished than anything else in tbe world, except to make money and eat a good dinner at somebody else's expense."
