Already American commerce with
the islands and countries of the Pactflo
shows a greater gain In the year 1899

000,000; our total Imports Increased
S164.000.000, and $48,000,000 of this
increase was from Asia and Oceania.

With these interesting and instructive
figures before us, tha immediate future
of the Pacific coast seaport towns ap
pears particular bright. The greatest
activity prevail in the younger and
mora progressive cities of tha .North
west, with Seattle, Portland and Ta
coma eagerly vying with each other for
commercial lupremaoy. The heavy in
vestments made during the past year
by Eastern capitalist in this section
reflect the fullest realisation of exist
ing condition by the far-sighted invest'
ing class. The Pacifio Northwest is
just emerging out of the hour of dawn
to bathe in the most brilliant ray of
prosperity which ever shown upon any
country. ,
. Fruit Caaaery.
The farmers of Eagle valley. Or., are
about to erect a fruit cannery. At
meeting held at the scboolhouse at that
place the farmers of the valley sub
scribed $3,000 for the purpose. The
total cost of the plant will be about
$5,000, and, as this ia the first meeting
held, the farmers are confident that no
trouble will be met with In raising the
full amount. The establishment of the
cannery will be ot much benefit to
Baker City, as well a to the farmer
of the valley, where a large amount of
fruit is raised annually. The cannery
will be conducted on the oo-operativs
plan, and it is the ".iention to take all
the fruit offered by the farmers. Much
of the product will find a market in
Baker City, as the home consumption
is large and is steadily Increasing.

A company ha been organized to
take water out of the Deschutes at
point near the Three Sister known a
Lava island, and conduct the water to
the desert lying east of the river. The
point of diversion Is said to be one of
the best on the river owing to the ab
sence of rocky bluffs. From this point
water will be taken east to the old
river bed, 15 mile, covering large
tracts of excellent farming lands.
