C, A. Dahlke, one of th best known
farmer of the Clem neighborhood, wa
brutally assaulted at hi home Monday
evening and almost beaten to death. It
I (uppoied the object of the assault w as
robbery. Dahlke managed to drag him
self to the residence of II. T. l'ropst af
ter the assault, where he arrived cover
ed with blood aud nearer dead than
alive. Dr. Luna wa nmmoned by tel
ephone and upon hi arrival found
Dahlke hearty unconscious. He had 23
distinct wounds on hi head and the skull
wa fractured In two or three place be
tide one finger being broken. Appear
ance Indicated that the woik wa done
with a hatchet or tome blunt Instru
ment. From the time Dahlke reached
l'ropst' he wa so nearly unconscious as
to be unable to give any lucid account of
the occurence. He, however, called at
tention to certain points, which may be
of value and said hit assailant
wa masked. It it thought that the
chance are against hi recovery. Dep
uty Sheriff l'inkham went to Clem at
onceio look for cluea in the case but at
thi writing nothing new ha developed.

thorities were at onre notified and a
meeting of the conueil was called and
vigoron action ' wa taken to prevent
the spread of the disease. Dr. Lnna was
appointed hearth officer and he at once
eatablinhed a riitid auarnnttna of the
Fix building, in which the Model restan
rant ia located, and by noon the marshal
had that part of the west aide of Main
treet fronting the Fix building, closed
to travel. Allperaona who were in the
building at the time will be kept there
until all danger of contagion i past and
all other possible precantione are being
taken to prevent an epidemic.
On Monday a comfortable dwelling
house on Mont Ward' , farm, about one
mile from town, (the old King house)
wa secured and fitted op for a hospital
and Tuesday morning the patient waa
removed there where he will be nursed
by Dr. Hogan who, though not an im
mune, has had large experience in
treating thi disease, and who volun
teered to acta norse for thi case and
any other that may develop.
Our city officials and physician are
entitled to much credit for their prompt
action in this emergency and it i hoped
the disease may be stamped out before
it become scattered.
The schools have been closed and it
ia probable that char, h services and oth
er meeting of a public nature will be
discontinued for a week or two or until
