Mother and. Child Find Death
Together. A Shocking
. Tragedy. '
The community whs shocked on Frl
duty evening by a report brought In by a
messenger that the bodies of Mrs, Ijhu
rrt A. Kelitey and her tiine-montbs-olil
bttbe bad Imen found dead In a large
spring on Dave ttussell'e ranch about 8
miles northwest of town.
Justice of tbe Pence U. L. Neale, act
ing aa coroner, at once einpnneled a jury
and went out to the scene of the tragedy
arriving at the ranch at shout 9.80 p. m.
The Jury was composed of tbe following
gentlemen i J, K. Clark, It. J, Palmer,
II. O. Jordan, J. A. KIser, Wiley Miller
and 8. A. Paulson. Dr. 8. K. Luna also
accompanied the party. When tbe cor
oner and hie party arrived at the ranch
the bodies were still lying where they
had been tultun from the water. They
were removed to tbe bouse and an in
vestigation was commanue I.
Mr and Mrs. Kussell were the only
witnesses examined, at that time, their
testimony, given in brief, being substan
tially as follow) I
Mrs, Kelsey was Mrs. Russell's sister.
Her maiden name waa Vaughn and her
father resides at Athena. She was mar
ried In June, '08, but was separated
from her husband. She wae 18 years
old last August. 8he came to Russell's
about a year ago and her baby was born
there last April. Bhe also had a child
three years old which is with her pa
rents at Athena. Bhe was In tbe habit
of Uklng tbe baby out In the sunshine
for awhile each day when the weather
was fine and when she took the child
and went out at about 2 o'clock that af
ternoon, nothing was thought of It by
either of tbe witnesses who were both In
tbe bouse at tbe time, nor did they no
tice anytbiog unusual in her manner.
Doth witnesses testified that there had
been no trouble of any kind between
either of them and the deceased and
neither of them gave any opinion aa to a
probable cause that might have led to
suicide. After the examination of these
witnesses waa concluded Dr. Luna was
called upon to make an examination of
tbe bodies and In doing so it was found
that a child's diaper was tied tightly
aronod the womeu's neck whlcb, witb
other Indications, pointed to strangula
tion. No marks of violence could be
found on the child and It being evident
that death In Its case was caused by
drowning, tbe jury returned the follow
ing verdict:
"We, tbe coroner's Jury, empaneled to
ascertain the cause of the death of Cecil
Kelsey, find that he came to his death at
David Russell's rsnch, in Gilliam coun
ty, Oregon, on Friday, .January 19 1000,
by drowning."
Tbe inquest on tbe body of Mrs. Kel
sey waa then continued until the follow.
ingday when tbe bodies were removed to
town and au autopsy of the body of tbe
mother was performed by Drs. Luna
and Ilogan which resulted In the fact
being established by their testimony,
that death was caused prlmarially by
strangulation and secondarially by
drowning. That is to say thst lbs
cloth around the woman's neck ' was
tight enough to cause death in Itself but
not so tight but that a very little water
entered her lungs after she wss In the
spring, which may have hastened death.
Mr, and Mrs. Uussell were both recall-
ad aud Wni. Welsh, a nephew of Mr.
Russell wss also examined. The only
thing developed wss that Welsh was at
Russell's place Friday forenoon ; that
after he left Mrs. Kelsey spoke to Mrs.
Russell about going to a dance which
was to be given In the neighborhood
that evening; that Mrs. Russell told ber
ahe should not go where she was not
wanted and that ber sister replied that
it was all right to go for Welsh bad In
vited her and asked her to go. This
conversation took place, according to
Mrs. Russell's testimony, shortly before
ber sister left the house for the last time
Welsh, when placed on the stand, de
nied this story; said be was at the
ranch but had no conversation whatever
with deceased; , did not mention tbe
dance or hear it mentioned while there.
Welsh was not a very willing witness
and it there, was anyone who knew any
thing of s probable cause which might
lead tothe tragedy they did not make it
known to the Jury.
The verdict follows :
"We the coroner 'a Jury empaneled to
investigate the cause of the death of Mrs
Laura A. Kelsey return tbe following as
our verdict:
"That deceased came to her death at
David Russell's ranch, in Gilliam county
Oregon, on Friday, January 10, 1000.
"Thst the cause ol death waa strangu
lation, prlmarially, and secondarially,
from drowning.
That we have been nnable to deter
mine whether ber death was caused by
ber own act or by that of some person
or persons unknown."
The mother and her babe were buried
in the Condon cemetery on Sunday, at
2 o'clock.

Life in Portland. Climax of
Sensational Divorce Suit .
Hon. fldney G, Ifnwson, who repre
sented this county In the last legislature,
and who was well known by almost ev
ery man, woman, and child in Gilliam
county, shot himself through the hear,.
Monday, In bis room at the Ji.nnond ho
tel in Portland. The following account
of the tragedy is taken from tbe Portland
Telegram. . .
"Hawson came here a little more than
week ago to answer in a divorce suit in
stituted by his wife. The suit attracted
considerable attention, on account of the
well-known parties who were interested.
"For a week Hawson has been at the
Esmond, and most ol the time has been
drinking, lie was sober today, howev
er, when he appeared in the olliceof the
hotel, about 2 o'clock, and asked Huns-
er Anderson II his bill was paid np in
ull until today. Being Informed that
It was, he turned to go to the elevator,
requesting Mr. Anderson to call him lor
the 8 o'clock bus as he wished to take
the 8:45 train (or home.
'Going op on the elevator he handed
the elevator boy 48 cents, and asked him
to come to hie room and lie np some pa
pers for him.
The boy took tbe elevator back to the
lower floor, and then returned to Haw-
son's room, where be found the occu-
psnt removing his overcoat. The boy
went into the front part of tba room to
tie op the papers lust as Hawson laid
down on tbe bed. the next instant ths
sound of a pistol was beard, and tbe hoy
ran from the room and down stairs, cry
ing out that the man had shot himself.

O. Hawson of Arlington, a brother of
the dead man with his wife and W. H.
Colwell and Ross Beardsley, represent
ing the K. P. lodge, went to Portland
and accompanied the remains to Arling
ton where they were interred yesterday
at 2 P. M. under the auspices of the
Mstoos and K. Ps.
