THE COHDOH GLOBE.
T I J RSPAY. NOVEMBER 16. 1890.
THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM
COUNTY; OREGON.
ri.UMMEK-SI'Llif.
One II. R. Mummer, of Tolk
county, hus recently niaI! an ugly
rhue Agninxt Governor Oeer and
one which the people of the stale,
without regard to party, r ill hope
to see proven, by the governor, to
he false. It is to the effect that on
the'JSth day of April, 1898, Hum
mer paid Mr. (leer $1000, in con
pideration of which, Mr. Geer, if
fleeted governor, was to appoint
Pluiiiiiier superintendent of the
penitentiary. Plutiimer claims to
hold the governor's receipt for the
amount and has gone so far as to
have the eanie published in a Salem
newspaper. He further claims that
upon the governor's failure to keep
his part of the contract and give
hiiu (Plummer) the desired plum,
he demanded and received his
money back with an additional
$1000 as damages. We fail.to see
w here Plummer has any kick com
ing, as -JflOOO profit on such a tran
saction is a pretty good 'Take off'
itself. Taking for granted that the
story is true, however, it looks as
though Plummer must have regard
ed the penitentiary plum as some
thing of a pudding or he would not
have risked a "blind" of $1000 on
a $1300 a year "pot". Plummer
should not give such snaps away.
The people will soon lose faith in
all webfoot politicians and come to
regard Salem as being as rotten the
year .around as it is known to be
when the legislature is in session.
Knt seriously, if Plummer'scharge
is false and all good people in the
state will hope and be inclined to
believe it is the governor owes it
to himself and to the people who
elected him to bring his traducer
up with a short turn and make him
suffer the extreme penalty for crim
inal libel. It ia not well that the
chief executive of the great state of
Oregon should suffer such a stigma
nf farmers and grain dealers. There
is little prospect for the price of
wheat to rise, until these wars are
brought to a close and transports
are no longer needed in the govern
ment service. Not until then will
charters fall and the wheat grower
receive the market value of his
product. In short, the wheat pro
ducer is paying an enormous fine
for the conduct of the war in the
Philippines and in South Africa,
and it does not set well on his stom
ach, as thess wars are not being
waged for his benefit, present or
future. East Oregonian.
THE TRUSTS STll.L A TIT.
Prices continue to go up on what
you buy. The newspaper gets
caught along with the rest of them.
The price of paper has gone up 10
to 20 per cent., envelopes 15 to 25
per cent., machinery about the
same; type 50 to 60 per cent. Every
few days we get new price lists
showing a raise and reserving the
right to change again without
notice. You get a quotatiou of
prices on an article today and
when you order tomorrow are sur
prised to find the price has gone
up and you have to pay more.
There is no help for it unless you
can do without and often you can't.
The wholesale firms charge all this
to the trusts, and say there is no
prospect of any fall.in prices. They
say they would prefer that prices
would fall again, as they could do
more business and get better pro
fits. Now, who is getting the
benefit of such arbitrary raises in
prices? Not the publishers, not
the printers, not the readers, not
the wholesale houses, but the big
capitalists who combine and in
crease prices, putting the profits in
their pockets. fayette idaho;
Independent.
One "graft" that failed in the
last Oreaon legislature was the
proposed sugar beet bounty law.
Those interested ones who were be
hind the measure were loud in
their assertions that this "infant
industry" should be protected and
fostered or it would fall flat. Time
has proven that without a bounty
more beets were grown in Grande
Ronde valley this year than last,
the present crop being fully up to
the capacity of the factory. The
people should keep an eye on all
such class legislation in the future
and all aspirants for legislative
honors should be given to under
stand that they must "stand pat"
on such propositions or everlast
ingly remain at home.
It is astonishing how much en
couragement and satisfaction both
pariies are able to extract from an
' off year" election. Bryauis "tick
led to death" over the result in
Nebraska and McKinley is urbane
ly exhilirated over the result in
Ohio. Mayor Sam Jones, of Tole
do, gets "cussed" by both sides and
perhaps he enjoys that. Mayor
Jones is like a premature peach
bloom he came out too soon and
got frosted. He might do better 10
years hence. "The world do move."

The transformation of a band of
300 Indian ponies is thus followed
to a conclusion by the Tiuies
Mountahier: "Art Miller got the
ponies for the Linnton cannery.
Soldiers in the Philippines get the
meat. The Indians convert the
purchase price into whiskey and
get drunk. The governmemt gets
the revenue tax on the liquor. The
city gets a fine out of the red men,
and the Indian has a headache

There is prosperity for everybody
but the wheat grower. While the
prices of all other products have
elevated the price of wheat has
steadily fallen. In fact even silver
has held its own better than wheat.
At this time an ounce of silver will
buy in Pendleton more than a
bushel of wheat. To war in the
Philippines and in South Africa
can be attributed tho low price of
wheat. The heavy demand for
transports that these wars brought
about has increased the price of
charters and correspondingly low
cred the price of wheat in the hands
