A shown by the recent report filed
bv Judges Mariner and Laycock nd
Cnnl v Clerk Butler, the total indebted
ness of this county ou March 4th 1809
as $32,tit3.0o. Of this amount the
mine report sets aside the enm of
I5 9a&.74 to be assumed by Wheeler
painty. It also places a valuation of
$3000 on our county buildings. Turn
ing to the last semi-annual statement of
the condition of the county made on
March 31st, 1809, we find that the re
sources of the county represented by the
amount in the hands of the county treas

amounted to the turn of 22,293.00.
Taking the total indebtedness, then,
of 4-32,063.06 we will subtract the amount
assumed bv Wheeler. (5.985.74) which
leaves ns $20,677.31. From that amount
take the resources as shown above (fi,

the fact that no matter how cheap an article may be, if it is
inferior in quality, our customers remember how inferior,

high grade goods.

Wheeler county starts out with an in
debtedness of almost $35,000, assumed
from the three old counties, and her on
ly resource is her current tax. The
salaries of her county officers, the ex
pense of transcribing' "records, state and
school tax and the numerous incidental
a new county is bound to incur must all
be paid from that tax and when this is
done it is not likely there wil be much
left to apply on the original debt.
The Portland OreRonian has undertak
en the work of raising a large fund with
which to erect a suitable monument in
memory of the Oivgon Volunteers who
lost their lives in the rruilippines. ine
obiect is a laudable one and every sec
tion of the state should respond. We
hope to see some of Condon's patriotic
citizens start a subscription here for the
Bnrnoee. The Oregnnian headed tbe
list with a donation of $500.
The Fossil Journal gave an interest

editor is something of a ball player him

work. The Journal is to be commended
for its enterprise and fearlessness in this
matter.
