A SUGGESTION .

westward this spring. Probably
in no othor section of the- United
flutes is there so large a body of
first-class agricultural land lying
acaal ns here and if the thou-
inula of homeseekers who are
cutning this way but knew of it,
every quarter sectioD would be
taken within the next six months.
It would well repay those of us
who are here to make an effort to
attract the right class of settlers
and if the people would only co
operate a little In the matter the
cost would ba trifling. Some print
ed matter descriptive of the re
sources of our county, distributed
on the next homeseekers' excur
sion train that comes this way,
by some live man who could meet
and get acquainted with" the new
comers, could not fail to be pro
d active of great good and the Globe
hopes to see our people take hold
of the matter and see that some
thing is done. ,
There should be no misrepre
sentation of the country but a
plain, lucid statement of the condi
tions as they are. The county
does not need a flood, of laboring
men without capital, but rather a
class of thrifty, industrious families
who have sufficient capital to hold
down a homestead until they can
raise a crop.
A thickly settled country means
better schools, better social ad-
vantages, more wheat to sell and
more money with which to buy
goods from our merchants. This
is made as a suggestion and we
hope to see it acted upon.
PLANT TREES.
Now tht Condon has a good
supply of water, and a first-class
distributing syBtem for the same.
every citizen of our town who has
not already done so should plant
a few trees, bow a little grass seed
or do something to improve and
beautify the town. '
Nothing so much enhances the
appearance of a town as shade-
trees, green grass and neatly kept
lawns and dooryards, aud if each
one of us will do a little along this
line the coming summer our town
will be a more attractive place to
live in than it has ever been.
No better field could be found in
which to organize a "Village I in
provement Club," but if we can
not have the organization, let us
have the proper spirit, with a fixed
determination to do something
during this year to improve our
town, riant a tree and lay up for
yourself and others a treasure to
be enjoyed on hot summer days
in the future.
THIS IS TOUGH.
A Washington volunteer at Ma
nila writes to the Seattle Times,
under date of February 15th, as
follows: .
"Native women and children in
our neighborhood and beyond, as
well as old men and sick, are
absolutely starving to death. Their
husbands and fathers have been
killed, wounded, captured or driven
back to Malolos, their houses burn
ed to the ground, with all their
earthly possessions, and they are
left with no means of subsistence.
They attempt to come into the
American lines by thousands, but
have to bo turned back. We can
not feed them."
It makes all the difference in the
world whose ox does the goring.
Two years ago, when the Spanish
forces were trying to starve the
Cubans into subjection, the Ameri
can people held up their bands in
holy horror at such a barbarous
spectacle, and hastened to send
tona of food and clothing and thou
sands of dollars in coin to alleviate
the sufferings of a persecuted peo
ple. Since engaging in the war
for humanity business, however,
and especially since , drifting from
that into a war for conquest, the
temper of the people has changed
and we can now . view with com
placency scenes that 13 or 20
months ago would have made our
blood boil with indignation. Then,
it was an act of Spanish cruelty'
arid barbarity. Now, it is an act
of American valor. What will the
end be?
A small sea serpent is reported
to have been caught at the Solomon
islands. It onlj weighed 70 toos,
had but two heads and was covered
with hair only a couple of feet long.
While none of the matter fa the

beg to suggest to a certain Morrow
county exchange that an unwritten
law of common courtesy among
newspapers makes it imperative
that reprints should be credited to

first taken. We feel complimented
that our neighbor should bo fre
quently quote us, but how are we
to know but that all other matter
in his editorial column is secured
in the same surreptitious manner?
If he wants credit for his own work
he should give it to others.
The refinement of cruelty as
distilled by the slow process of the
law in meting out justica to crimi
nals is seen in the case of Claude
6ranton,the Lanecounty murderer.
The execution of this criminal is
long over due. Both justice and
humanity are violated in keeping
human being upon a mental
strain by delaying the execution of
penalty until mind and body are
wrecked. The safety of society .de
mands that cold blooded murder
ers should, upon proper conviction.
be executed: the good name of
civilization requires that execution
should follow conviction promptly.

phone line which he is constructing
between here and Gooseberry, and it is
only n.atter of a few days until that
portion of the country will be in tele
phone connection with us. Telephones
will be pat in, using the barb wire fence
for a line, at James and C. A. Rhea's
farmhouses, the post offices at Uoose-
lierry and Eightmlle or at a farmhouse
quite near the latter place, R. K
Sampson and A. T. King's farmhouses

desirous of having a line established
from their places here and it is quite
probable the same will be done. Mr.
Haney has under consideration the
matter of putting in poles from Condon
to Gooseberry, and then utilising the
harb wire line on in to lone for the
present, and this plan Mil be suggested
in the matter of the telephone connec
