The team attached to 11. G. Jordan's
batcher wagon ran away on Sunday
near I). B. Trimble's place and took a
lively sprint through town. Four quar
tersolbeef were In the wagon when
they started and the meat was scattered
from the church to the postofflce. At
that point the tugs gave way and the
wagon was left, while the team d I "ap
peared in the dense fog. The damage
done was slight.
Miss May Wallace, a teacher In the
Pendleton academy, waa shot through
the body while standing by a window
at the home of her parents in that city
one evening last week. The shot was
fired through the window glass by some
person who stood on the outsldo of the
bouse. Suspicion rest upon a young
Chinese uamod Goon as the perpetrator
of the crime. It Is believed the wound
will prove fatal.
There It no scarcity of dogs In Condon
this winter. This announcement Is
made for the benefit of any one who

active dogs, hounds, curs, poodles and

sausage factory, which, .so fur, have
escaped the executioner.
Town killers are classified Into eight
separate branches, as follows: First,
those who go out of town to do tliclr
shopping ; second, those who are op
' posed to .Improvements; third, those
who prefer a quiet town to one of push
and enterprise; fourth, those who Imair
I no they own the town; Attn, those who
deride public-spirited men; sixth, thoHe
who oppose every movement that does
not originate with them ; seventh, those
who oppose every movement that does
not annear to benefit them; eighth,
those who seek to Injure the creditor

Oregon at Omaha.
Oregon people can point with pride nt
the record made by the exhibits from
their state at the Omuha Exposition.
l'o this state -an empire within It Hell-
was awarded IV!) medal, three more
than was given to any other state, snd
five diplomas of tho highest award of
merit, A Hiiiiiiimry of the awards mIioms
that Oregon agricultural -displays led,
with 18 medals; milling and minerals,
37; educational, 5; horticultural, 60;
fishery, 2; forestry, 0; und miscellane
ous, 7. Twenty-two medals are gold, 27
are silver, and 37 bronze. There lire 41
honorublu mentions.
In the agricultural display there are
three tlrst prizes, 10 gold medals and five
silver and broi jse medals. In this the
highest award Is made. In tho mlnlnn
lisplay there Is a first prize, one gold
medal, two silver and 23 bronze medals.
In education, the award is four gold
medals, and one silver. This decision
Is especially gratifying on account of the
limited display. In horticulture, five
gold medals are swarded, 11 stiver med
als, and 10 bronze medals and IS honor
able mentions of highest merit are given.
One gold and one silver medal is given
for the fishery display. In the forestry
display, seven gold medals, one silver
medal and one bionze medal are given .
The trophies and medals secured f.,r
Oregon exceed those won by any other
three states represented at the exposi
tion.

Hiiperintendent W, W. Kennedy, as
sisted by Misses Grace Cooke and Ms In-1
llalstead, held the regular quarterly
examination of teachers here last week.
Miss Mollis Mnrlburt, of Arlington, Mr.
It. M. K'Hlgers, of Ferry Canyon, and
Mrs. O. it. Miles, of Fossil, took the
examination. Miss llurltmrt received
a first grade certificate, Mr. H lgers a
second grade, and Mrs. Miles a third
grade. The last named lad' , passed
high enough to entitle her to a second
grade only for the reason that she had
not taught the required length of time
to receive higher than a third grade
certificate.
Cables West.
On Sunday evening, Nov. 6, 1898. Mr.
Elgin Cables and Miss Nettie West were
nnited In marriage al the home of the
bride's parents on Itock creek, Judge II.
, Randall performing the ceremony,
About 40 gnestt were present to wit-
nest the ceremony and to join In con
gratulations to the popular young couple,
who are highly respected, and deserved
ly to by all who know them.
The wedding ceremony was performed
promptly at 6:30 p. m., and shortly
sfterward an elegant wedding dinner
was served.

Canyon City Destroyed.
The entire bnsiuest portion of Canyon
City was destroyed by lire on the night
of the llth Inst. Only a few resllences,
the court house, News ollicn and the
bowling alley remain. The origin of
the fire is supposed to tie Ironialsmp
explosion in the ICIkhorn Hotel. There
was no Insurance on anv ol the prnarty
with the exception of the Mxsonic hall
and the loss will leave many of the busi
ness men bankrupt.
