That was a brilliant bit of work Jone by Lieutenant Hobson and bis nix n.en at the entrance of San tiago harbor the other day. These ,men are tnatTe of the same stuff of which the heroes of old were made, and the fact that Admiral Samp son's call for seven volunteers to engage in the perilous undertaking was responded to by 4000 men is pretty good evidence that the Ame rican navy is composed of first-rate material. With all due respect to Admiral Dewey, who is entitled to, and is just now receiving the plaud its of the world, we are forcibly re minded by such incidents as the one above referred to that "there are others," many of whom instead of gold lace and sboulder bars, wear ouly a common seaman's jacket. A number of farmers in Yakima county, Washington, recently pur chased about ten tons of groceries in. San Francisco, says the Orego nian. The stuff unloaded from the train at North Yakima was the biggest lot of trash ever seen in the Northwest, but the farmers took it and paid for it rattier tnan go to law. They were swindled out of 30 or 40 cents on the dollar. It nerves them right. A. Northwestern farmer who would patronize San Francisco in preference to his home town deserves to be swindled. As a further punishment he should be compelled to find a market for his produce in San Francisco. The offer recently made by the Oregoniao-to-pay the sunt of $10, C0O to- any one- proving that a cheaper dollar can be substituted for one of ereater value in the pay ment of debts and wages without reducing the value of debts and wages in the same proportion that the value of the dollar is reduced, la been called by Prof. Sydney Dell, of Portland, who claims to have offered satisfactory proof of the proposition and has made a formal demand on the Oregonian for the $10,000. Of course the Oregonian did not consider the proof sufficient and refused to Dunsrle. whereutxm Mr. Dell has instituted a suit for the amount. The suit is one of the most curious on record and wiU place the courts of Multnomah county in the posi tion of rendering-a decision on the money question. vThem are My Sentiments. A Willamette valley deacon bought a lot of flasrs for the Sondav school children the other day, and when they were de livered it was found that the words "Remember the Maine To hell with Spain!" were on each of them. The deacon said "Them are my sentiments," but regret fully sent the flags back. T. G. Johnson has completed a new well for the use of his livery barn. It will furnish an abundance of water. B. P. Shott and family left this week for a eoople of weeks' visit with relstives in California, after whicn M r. onuu expects to strain embark in the news paper business in that state, where he hopes to escape pneumonia, with which he has been troubled so pinch within the last few years in this section. Eov Ehbert and Frank Moore were among the Condonites who attended the political meeting at Olex last Saturday evening. There was a little dance given after the meeting closed, and it is snid that Uov and Frank imbibed too freeley ef Olex bitters and were snowed os-ler. rr in other words, they wasn't in It with the Olex bloods. A patent has been isfned to W. A. Darling, of this place, for a gold saving mai-hine. npon which he has been work Ing for soioe time. The machine con sists of a series of pans, to which are eiven the same rotary and dipping mo. tinii that is given to the common gold pan in the hands of an expert miner. Mr. Darling thinks the machine will mark a new era in river bar mining.
