THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM

The Ashland Becord, whose editor is
. J. Kaiser, has this in the last issue
of his paper: "Rev. H. 8. Wallace, the
Junction City evangelist who has been
conducting revivals at Klamath Falls,
Wood river and Lakeview, took Mon
day's train for the north. He is a re
formed lawyer, and after seeing the
wickedness of his profession and sinful
life, took a tumble to himself and re
pented. There are other lawyers who
need repentance bad enough, but have
been so steeped in infamy that redemp
tion is beyond reach. Nothing but hell
could disturb their conscience." The
Enirene finarrl comments: "Law vers
are jnat as good as any other class of
professional men, notwithstanding Kai
ser's unjust attack."
Many residents of The Dalles look up
on the extension of the Columbia South
ern railroad into the interior as a calam
ity, and a thrust from which the city
will not soon recover. And to Borne ex
tent it will, though the damage need nut
be permanent. That the building of this
road further south than its present term
inus will extract from The Dalles much
of the wheat and wool trade that now
comes here cannot be disputed, for peo
ple will not make long hauls by wagon
over steep and difficult wagon roads when
they can reach a railroad by shorter
banls. Times-Mountaineer,
The president is expected to make all
the remaining appointments for Oregon
in a few days. Among the list of ap
pointments will be the collector of in
ternal revenue and a large majority of
the land office officials. The leading can
didates for collector of cuatoms, which is
worth about $15,000 a year, are Otis Pat
terson of the lieppner Gazette and Dave
Dunn of Portland. Each of these are
promised a smaller plum if they don't
succeed in landing this big persimmon.
As predicted by this paper from the
first, H. W. Corbett, the Portland mill
ionaire banker, was refused a seat in the
U. 8. senate. His case came up for dis
posal the other day in Washington and
be was politely told that it would be a
most dangerous precedent to seat an ap
pointed senator, and that settled it. Ore
gon, therefore, will have to struggle
along with one senator until the legisla
ture meets again next winter.
Governor Lord this week granted a
full pardon to Fred Gulon aDd Frank
Kimball, who, with the two Miller boys,
were sent to the penitentiary from Grant
county, in October, 1895, for the larceny
of cattle. The Miller boys were pardoned
some time aio.
The Virginia legislature proposes to
tax bachelors. There is little excuse for
ft bachelor in Virginia. To tax them
will encourage "an infant industry."

NON-ALCOHOLIC.
No man who lives on meat was ever
known to lick his wife, or ask for aj
divorce. A vegetable diet woman is as
cold and clammy as a turnip. If you
want your girl to have rosy cheeks and
vitality in ber motion, feed her on beef
steak with occasional doses of Dr. Haw
son's Tonic Bitters. 8old everywhere.

To The Public.
I have taken charge of the old Dod
eon livery stables in Arlington and hope
my friends from everywherewill remem

rates are very moderate and the very
best care is taken of stock left in my care.
Give me a chance. J. F. Thomas.
Good Advice.
Don't let whisky get the best of you,
but if you want the best of whisky,
wines, bVer, liquors and cigars, the place
to find them is at the Snmmit Saloon,
in the old drug' store building. A fine
pool and billiard parlor in connection.
Drop in and see for yourselves. The
finest line of "wet goods" in the city.
Seed Potatoes for Sale.
I have at my ranch near Clem two varieties of
fine potatoes one purple, with white around the
eye that I imported, and is called the "Centen
nial;" the other I originated here and have
named it "The Gold Standard." became I don't
think it will depreciate in value aa a wholesome
food. Both kinds are snow-white Inside and of
a most delicious flavor. They are easily grow a
without cultivation, and the yield is very large.
They irrow to enormons slse, many of them 5
and 6 poands apiece. I can S)are a few of these
potatoes for seed at 2c per 100-lb lots, or 2'.fC for
smaller lots, at my ranch. Those wanting any
oi them most ordersoon, a the supply is limited.
