Professor Jacobsen, or as he is better
known at home in The Dalles, "Jake?,"
the well-known piano and organ man,
arrived here about the same time as
Judge Bradshaw. But they didn't come
together, and they don't board at the
same bote), for the judge has given
Jakey the cold shoulder, and we give the
judge's reason in his own words: "While
attending court latelv at Condon "Jakey"
invited lue on Sunday to have dinner
with him at a friend's house, where I
found a charming nineteen-year-old at
traction of the feminine gender. The
dinner was all rigbtf but just as soon as
the table was cleared the "attraction"
left the room. Jakey followed, then the
young folks left, and lastly the old man
and old woman cleared out and left me
alone. I sat in no envious frame of mind
. for about balf an hour, and finally made
a rnn for the kitchen, where I found
Jakey comfortably seated in an old arm
chair, and the whole family chucking
him under the chin, to the music of such
endearing epithets as "Nice little Jaker."
"Dear little Jakey," "Fuuny little
Jakey." Is it any wonder I got mad and
vowed I never wonld have anvthing to
do- with him any , more?" Prineville

Portland Welcome : The 20 members
of the Press association who went to
Baker City arrived there Friday noon,
met a few minutes in the afternoon, had
lunch in the evening, visited Snropter
Saturday, and came home if sober
enough Sunday. The press of the state
wonld have been in a terrible predica
ment it this important business had not
been attended to. The real newspaper
wea who bad to stay at home and work
should be under great obligations to the
brethren who performed this onerous
and very necessary duty. Out of 1000 or
so newspaper men in the state, only 20
attended the association, and of coarse
all of them got an office or two.
" A recently returned Kiondiker says
that the length of the polar night is one
hundred and forty-two days. What a
heavenly place that would be tn which
to tell a man with a bill to call around
day after tomorrow and get his money.

The present managers of the Butte
Creek saw mill (Messrs. Hendricks A
Steiwer, with T. L. Stewart foreman at
the mill) are endeavoring to get out 600,
000 feet of liimber this fall for the com
ing spring trade. They now have most
all kinds of seasoned lumber for the (all
trade. Their prices and quality of lum
ber, and good roads, are bringing them
an immense trade. The mill is running
at its full capacity, averaging about 15,
000 feet dailv.
