THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM
" COUNTY. OREOON.
ONE THING AND ANOTHER.
The trouble with great many men is
that they can't depend on what the;
y.
The man who gets aa large a salary as
he thinks he deserves, is usually over
paid. The chief end of man is his foot
especially when he has to foot his wife's
bills. . .: .
Instead of going to hell when be dies,
a man onght to be born again, and be a
woman.
If it is true that the clothes make the
man, some men ought to change their
clothes.
If too give a bald-headed man a fair
how, he will always be found well np
in front.
In the midst of life a man is in debt
and his creditors don't allow btin to
forget it.
If a man is big and fat and able to
keep his mouth shut, he can bluff nearly
anybody.
Man is incorrigible. He swears he will
give np bad habits and then keeps on
swearing.
A man may be as honest as the day is
long, and still do a lot of mischief during
. tne nigot.
The man who has a tendency to make
an ass 01 nimseit, never lacks lor skill
or material.
i ne man wno is always on tne fro
generally dosn't know how to stop when
ne geiB mere.
The man who claims to have no mem
ory, may be cured by lending small sums
to nis irienaa.
Shallow men are creoerallv despised,
but tbey don't require as much watch'
ing as deep ones.
When a man finds his cothes are too
looue, he should either change tailors or
Doaramg-nouses.
The successful man always sticks to
one thing until be gets there. So does
the postage stamp.
Nature has wisely arranged matters
so that a man can neither pat his own
back or kick nimseu.
The man who is a little selfish, dis
plays more horse sense than the one
who is too generous.
Man born of woman is of few dayi
but the hangtity self-made man thinks
be ought to live forever.
A man ia ftlwflri ranfiniv nmafMni
. V s
ne can't get, ana is always getting some-
tnmg ne does not want.
No man can be absolutely perfect, not
even a perfect chump but some of them
are near it, very near it.
It is not until a man reaches thirty
that be begins to wrap the small bills
on the outside of the roll.
It is an easy matter to get your fellow
men to speak well of you ; all you have
to ao is lay aown ana aie.
A man may be both a success and
failure ; be may be a success as a failure,
ana a uuiure as a success.
Clothes may not make the man ; bat
it is useless to create a disturbance by
going arouna wiinoat tnem.
When a man reaches that point where
ne is sausnea witn Himself, tne devil
puts another gridiron on the fire.
The world may owe every man a liv
ing, but the majority of them are too
laxy to bustle aroand and collect it.
It some men would remember the
answers to half the questions tbey ask
iney wouia nave a liberal education.
Nine men out or every ten never think
of winding the clock until after tbev
have put out the light and got into bed.
; If Darwin founded his theory of evolu
tiou on the monkey-shines man is con
tinually catting, be didn't miss it very
fr.
Many a man who claims to be looking
for work wouldn't recognize a job if it
stepped op and tapped him on the sboul
aer.
It is rather discouraging to a man to
be forced to wait nntil he is dead in
order to discover what a good fellow he
was. .,
No matter how poor a man is, there
may have been a time when he rode in
bis own carriage while bis mother
pushed it along.
Juneau Townsite Contest Set-
tied.
The following dispatch from Fort
Townsend to the 8. F. Examiner, dated
Sept. 26th, shows that Tommy Lyons is
fully "onto his job" and takes to his
work like a duck to water :
"A private dispatch received here to
night from Washington by a prominent
mining man, a resident of Juneau, Alas
ka, announces mat a united States pat
ent for 140 acres of the Juneau townsite
has finally been issued from the United
States Land office. Seventy acres is ex
cluded irom tne grant, that amount be
ing filed on as mineral claim. The pat
ent issues io townsite irostee X. u. Ly

contest pending since 1881 and is con
sidered to mean much for the advance

There is no danger of anybody being
tronbled with dyspepsia, sour stomach,
nightmares or ill temper who nses Fos
sil floor. Nothing rains the health so
quickly and surely as bad bread, and
nothing creates so much harmony and
cheerfulness in a family as good, light
bread and biscuits, "the kind your moth
er baked." The only way to accomplish
this is to use Fossil flour the best and
cheapest in the world.
The people of South Carolina believe
senators should be elected by direct vote
of the people and they have determined
their choice for the office in this way
In a recent senatorial contest the people
chose Judge McLaurin for United States
senator and the legislature will confirm
the selection when it meets. Since Mc
Laurin knows the people elected him,
and not the "agents of the corporations
and the trusts in the legislature," he
will doubtless serve the people aud keep
faith aita them in coustqueuue.

CONDON BLACKSMITH SHOP
G. S. CLARK, Proprietor.
CENERAL BLACKSMITHINC AND WOOD
WORK.
The Only First-class Blacksmith and
Horsesboer in the County.
MAIN STREET, CONDON. OREGON.
Desires to inform" the people of Gilliam county that his
business is running on full time at the old standUnion
Block, Arlington, Oregon; that the flashy, misleading
newspaper advertisements and circular letters that are
flooding the country have not affected his trade; but on
the contrary, sales have been increasing. His many old
friends and customers realize that no business man will
give away something for nothing. What he loses on the
"baits" he will, more than doubly make up on the other
goods he sells his customers. Look out for snares. One
of our greatest statesmen 40 years ago truthfully said:
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all
of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of
the people all of the time."
James W. Smith's immense stock of goods
will speak for him. Call and examine the
largest stock of goods ever shown in Gilliam
county. His stores are loaded from floor to
ceiling, and as regards prices he will en
deavor to keep in the "procession."
Many of the lines are bought direct from the East in large
quantities for cash, which enables him to give his custom
ers great inducements to favor him with their patronage.
He sells the Oliver Chilled plows
and extras, including the New
Departure two and three gangs,
also the John Deere plows of all
kinds, the Studebaker, Bain and
Racine wagons, hacks and bug
gies, the Standard, Acme and Mc-
Cormack mowers, reapers and
hay rakes, the latest improved
Pitts threshing machinery, the
up-to-date old reliable Hodge
steel-frame headers, Holt Bros.
Combined Harvesters, Etc., Etc.
Gamp and sheepmen's supplies a specialty.
