THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM
COUNTY. OREGON.
ONE THING AND ANOTHER.
No gentleman will swear before a. lady
let her swear first.
More men have been self-undone than
have been self-made.
A crank li a man who bai a different
bobby than your own.
If some men were to loee their reputa
tion they would be lucky.
A man isn't alwaya cool when be shiv
ers in the hoar of, danger.
A man always pats his foot forward;
a male pats his backward.
Most men are ready and willing to die
lor their country of old age.
The man who wants the earth Inva
riably gets it when he die. '
Some men have a gallon of words to
erary spoonful of thoughts.
gome men are so exceedingly modest
that tbey ebon the naked troth.
Hen are like chickens; tbey always
want to get on the highest rooet.
Some men are so dignified that tbey
never aabend until they are broke.
The man who attends strictly to his
own business has a good steady job.
It never coots a man off when the
street sprinkler throws water on him.
The more a man has the mora he
wants-unless It happens to be twins.
Giving a man advice and throwing
atones at a dog haa about the same effect.
How little a man knows of his coun
trymenunless he lives in a country
villaice.
The more rapidly a man goes, the
more likely be is to be overtaken by
misfortune.

A terrible wreck occurred at Squally
. Hook, below Grant, Monday morning.
The sand on the track caused the engine
of the freight train to jump tbe track,
killing the engineer, Chaa Johnston, and
perhaps fatally injuring the fireman.
In the Sunday Oregonian of Sept 19tb,
we noticed quite an account of "Klon
dike" as related by Mr Barber and wife.
We mignt add that Mrs Barber was for

Desires to inform the people of Gilliam oountj that hit
business ia running on full time at the old stand Union
Block, Arlington, Oregon; that the flashy, misleading
newspaper advertisements and circular letters that are
flooding the country have not affected his trade; but on
the contrary, sales have been increasing. His many old
friends and customers realite that no business man will
give away something for nothing. What he loses on the
"baits" he will more than doubly make up on the other
goods he sells his customers. Look out for snares. One
of our4 greatest statesmen 40 years ago truthfully said:
"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all
of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of
the people all of the time."
James W. Smith's Immense stock of goods
will speak for him. Call and examine the
largest stock of goods ever shown in Gilliam
county. His stores are loaded from floor to
ceiling, and as regards prices he will en
deavor to keep in the "procession.
