Some of the boys enlivened things up

Rev. Bade write that he and a chum

ever, that he will be here in time to
preach a week from next Sunday.
Sheriff Houser has lostbiscase against
Umatilla county for fees, traveling ex
penses, etc., which he sued for. The
supreme court bas just decided that no
sheriff in this state is entitled to any
compensation outside of his lawful sal
ary a provided by the legislature in
18U6.
Charley Burroughs and family moved
into Billy Burr's neat little residence
opposite the court house this week.
Billy expect to have the house enclosed
with a neat wire fence this fall. Mr.
and Mr. Burroughs, who came out here
last fall from Illinois are, so far, much
pleased with their new western bome.j

We learn tbat Roe Mathews has been
tendered the school at Lakeview this
fall. A good selection. We think they
prefer a man of a family, so Roos took

to look at some cooking utensils. If
they were both Impressed with the out
fit, he may take an assistant with biiu

After our school closed last spring, all
of the doors and window of the school
house were securely fastened, some with
nails. Recently some one broke out a
pane of glass, entered and opened all the
door and loft them open. It I not yet
known whether anything has been stolen
or not. They have been closed again,
and the school board offers a reward of
$5 for the detection of any one breaking
Into the building again without per
mission. II. C. Strickland met with a serious
accident Saturday evening, juBt after
dark. While riding rapidly over the
range about two miles from bis boose,
a coyote attracted the attention of both
rider and horse, and quick as a flash the
horse stepped Into a badger bole and
fell, catching Hugh's left leg under the
sharp edge of the saddle and breaking
the leg jnst above the ankle. The noble
old horse, with almost human Intel
ligence, gathered himself up and seeing
that his master was unable to walk,
came back and looked pitifully on while
Hugh set the broken bone as best be
could. With great difficulty he managed
to ciimb onto the horse and reach bis
home. Hi hired man, Billy Foster, at
once brought him to town, where be is
under medical care, at Rinehart'a res
taurant. It was a most unfortunate ac
cident for him, as it will incapacitate
him for work all summer, and just now
at the busiest season. His wife is still
at ber old home In Aberdeen, 8. D., and
also under medical treatment.
The editor of this paper and bis broth
er, E. M. Shutt, of the Antelope Herald,
expect to start tomorrow for a month's
visit at their old home in Pennsylvania.
There are 15 members of the Shutt (am
lly the parent and 13 children 7 boys
and 6 girls, all of whom are yet alive,
and all reside within a few miles of the
old homestead, except the two brothers
mentioned above. A reunion of the fam
ily will take place at the old home next
month, also the golden wedding of our
parents, who will have been married 50
years this fall. We expect to return to
Condon about 8ept. 17th or 18th. Dur
ing our absence the paper will be pub
lished by Mr. Samuel B. Baxter, who
can write a receipt so nicely that it will
be a pleasure for those who owe the pa
per to come in and pay up. As be is
deaf and cannot get onto the news a
well a one who can hear, we would con
alder it a great favor if our business men
here, or anyone else who desires to, will
write np any news they know of that is
worthy of note and band to him and
he'll do the rest.

Trespass Case.
A dispatch from Pendleton says that
the supreme coOrt bas decided the tres
pass case as shown below :

Gelde et a!., appellants; appeal from
Gilliam county ; opinion1 by Wolverton,
Jedge; affirmed.
This is an action of trespass, wherein
it is alleged that defendant unlawfully
and wilfully permitted their band of
sheep to be herded upon' the premises
and lands of plaintiff. The action was
commenced in the justice court, and,
upon appeal, to the circuit court. Judg
ment was rendered in favor of plaintiff,
from which the defendants appeal to
this court. After determining the effect
of the statutes relating to stock and fenc
ing with respect to Oilltain county, ana
accepting the decisions of Bileo vs. Pais
ley (18 Oregon 7), and trench vs. uress
well (13 Oregon 418), as stare decisis,
the court affirms the decision of the
lower court.

Frank Shurte made a business trip to
Portland last week. He says everything
is "Clondyke or bust" down there.
All of onr warehouses are making im
provements, so as to be prepared to han
dle all of the grain that comes to town.
Born, to the wife of Ross Beardeley,
July 28th, a son. Also, on tame date,
to tbe wife of Fred Doerfer of Olex, a
son.
We regret to learn tbat Mr D H Gager
did not bave a very pleasant outing.
On the way to the mountains she took
sick and was compelled to return.
Jasper Flannery came over tbe other
day from Goldendale to adjost Maj Red-
ford' gas lights. There appeared to be
some error made in putting them in.
Frank Robinson ba returned from a
visit to friend and relative at Lone
Rock. Frank says there will not be
enough cars on the road to baul off tbe
wheat crop tbat we will have tbis fall.
Arcb Weaver, son-in-law of Mrs J C
Sweet, wa brought up from Tbe Dalle
Monday evening. He has been confined
to bia bed for a long time with consump
tion, and ia not expected to live but a
day or so.
Lone Rock Rumblings.
Jeff Neal is behind the counter while
P L Ham is at tbe spring.
W II Colwell made a businees trip to
Arlington the first of the week.
Robert Brown of Haystack bas been
very sick with rbeumatio fever for some
time.
One of Ira Reed's little girls got her
hand and arm badly burned by a kettle
of trailing water being upset on ber tbe
other day.
John E Johnson is having more than
bis share of sickness in his family. An
other one of bis children has been very
low for several days.
The July jnst past bas been the coldest
on record in this section of country,
having gone down to within one degree
of the freezing point seyen nigbts during
the month and on the night of the 7th
it was 2 degrees below freexing.
Some of the enterprising boy should
get up a horse race, foot race or have a
fight or two most anything would do,
just to make some kind of news to re
port. This place is getting too civilised
for a reporter to make a good showing.
Olex Explosions.
Mr H D Randal), who went to tbe
Valley recently, is reported quite sick at
Monmouth.
C A Danneman and P Weir each de
livered a bunch of fine beef cattle at
Portland last week.
Quite an influx of Valley pedestrians
have arrived in Olex the past week, all
findiug plenty of work. v
There was a public marriage at Olex
church Sunday. Mrs C P Grubb and
Mr M C Gloughlier of Pendleton were
united lu marriage by Rev Barnbart.
We wish them an abundance of pros
perity and happiness.
The coyote bounty seems to be a dead
issue. The "Honorable" Co court ought
to get up something else to bunco the
people out of several thousand dollars.
The people of Gilliam county are greatly
benefited by such officialism.
