THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM

The Law Debauched.
Beppncr Guetk.
. There mrm laws in this country. These
laws. ra& b vnfon-ed. Itii an insnltto

wissx It lead Ike outside to think that
rtpohtwiaa sham. That the sheep
men break the law ia no excuse for
ether to also break the law by commit
tin arson and outrage that none bat
savages would stoop to do, No doubt
there have been impositions npon the
resident of Grant county. These can
be righted withoot an appeal to mob
law. In reality the Uaiette believes
- that it is a contest in Grant county that
has behind it the object of driving Mor
row county sheepmen off government
range.
The Eagle take the peculiar ground,
Inferntially, that mob law is right, or at
least Justifiable, in some cases, but men
tion the recent troubles in Grunt coun
ty as being deplorable, yet aa "a scrap
(or bread and butter on the part of the
resident ranchers and cattlemen, and
they have, aa a last resort, applied the
annst desperate remedies in order to pre
serve their homes." If the law of Ore
gon are not sufficiently strong and the
sffirers not patriotic or efficient enough
to see that the law are enforced, why
we had better try some ether plan of
government. The outrages committed
In Grout countv will not correct tbese
wrongs, nor will they prevent sheepmen
from using government . grass. Every
sheepman who fails to respect the laws
should be made to pay the penalty, but
in a country where good government
prevails, no recourse to mob law should
fee necessary.

Desires to inform the people of Gilliam county that his
business is running on full time at the old stand Union
Block, Arlington, Oregon; that the flashy, misleading
newspaper advertisements and circular letters that are
flooding the country have not affected his trade; but on
the contrary, sales have been increasing. His many old
friends and customers realize that no business man vill 1
give away something for nothing. What he loses on the
"baits" he will more than doubly make up on the other
goods he sells his customers. 1 Look out for snares. One
of our greatest statesmen 40 years ago truthfully Raid:
"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all !,
of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of
the people all of the time." v

The statement of ei-Secretary Foster
that by tbe acquirement of Hawaii "this

nevertheless without the force of argu
