lars" are being led against the
Turks by Helen Cunetantindas, an
iS-year-old girl, a Greek Joan of
Arc. A woman of this kind makes
a splendid leader. She will equal
the Turks in fervor. In things
barbaric Woman is much superior
to man. She shows this even in
civilized life, in dress, in the wear
ing of rings arid other jewelry, in
the painting of her face, and in the
use of perfumery, in the display of
color, in her love for fuss and
feathers and for ceremony and in
her adoration of any flesh decked
in uniform that makes of man a
counterfeit and not a natural

The people of Gilliam county
end too much money away to the
fities for go-ids that ought to be
purchased at home. Our local
merchants find it impossible to
carry profitably certain lines of
goods, because of the craze for
"sending away" for everything they
eat and wear. Every man and
woman interested in this county
fhould trade with the people who
re mi business here not with
Portland. Sat) Francisco or East
ern merchants who pay no taxes
here and do nothing whatever to
build up the towns or the country
tributary to them. Spend your
money in this county, where you
make it.

Judge L. L. McArthur, the well
known Portland lawyer, is lying at
the point ofdeath in Walla Walla.
