It is noticed that the Turks in
variably have the advantage in thej
afternoon dispatches, and the
Greeks regain their lost ground and
make formidable progress in their
campaign in those of the morning.
This is for the same reason that the
Spaniards invariably win in Ha
vana and the Cubans in Key West
dispatches. The Turks get their
news to London by the overland
telegraph, in time for the afternoon
papers. The Greek dispatches have
to go by cable across the Adriatic
to Italy, and so on through France,
and reach London in time only for
the morning papers. Victory in
modern war consists in reaching
the telegraph- office first? Orego-
man.
A Cook county farmer recently
went to a real estate agent and
offered to trade his farm for city
lots. The agent was all business
and was in for a trade at once. "I
want to show you," he said, "a
block of the finest lots anywhere in
Chicago. They are centrally locat
ed and cheap as sawdust. Get into
my buggy and I'll take you out to
see them." They drove out ' and
looked at the lots and the agent
expatiated at great length upon the
advantages of their location and
finally said: "Now, when can I
have a look at your farm?" "I'll
show it to you presently," said the
farmer, "it's about ten miles back
on the road between. hereand town."
The latest dispatches are to the
effect that the Greeks have given
up the fight and consider them
selves thoroughly whipped. This
leads the Salem Statesman to say
There is hope that the flush of sue
cess will make Turkey so cocky
that she will run up against one of
the big nations and get wiped off
the map of the world.
The Heppner Gazette hits all
those whose signatures appear on a
petition recently sent to Washing
ton, asking that Corbett be seated
as senator, a hard jolt, as follows:
"The whole outfit are a lot of bolt
ers and soreheads, not worthy the
notice of republicans in Washing
ton or anywhere else."
Greece has a population of 2,187

milesi and is more thickly popula
ted than any other country in Eu
rope, except Sweden and Prussia.
Only about 20,000 profess any re
ligion other than the orthodox.
Turkey has a population of about
35,000,000.
Here is a problem: A farmer
owned a hog and wanted to weigh
it. The man weighed 200 pounds
and his wife 135. They put a
board across a fence so that when
they sat upon the ends it exactly
balanced. They then changed
places, the wife taking the pig upon
her lap, just balancing the board
again. How much did the pig
weigh? - '- "

brought to recover taxes assessed
against the banks for 1892. The
decision affirms the right under the
state law to assess the bank as a
representative of the stockholders
to the extent of ita stock.

It is said that nearly every man
takes a longer stride with the right
leg than the left, and that in walk
ing a mile the left leg is eighty
eight feet short of the distance cov
ered bv its mate. If a man walks
five miles a day the shortage in a
year is about thirty miles. This is
one of the leaks that troubles the
arithmetic man far more than the
pedestrian.

try Hellas. Since they have been
thrashed now, it is likely they will
drop the last two letters of Hellas.
There seems to be too much Tur
key for the quantity of Greece to
