Little bankrupt Nevada, with
scarcely enough population for one
healthy county, is getting more
free advertising each day now than
she ever had in her life, owing to
Jhe proposed big prize fight on the
l?th of next month at Carson City
between Corbett and FHzsmirnons.
It is thought 100,000 people will
witness the "argument," including
the governor, who recently signed a
bill permitting prize fights in that
state. Corbet t and Fits have been
fighting through the. newspapers
for . the last three years, but on St.
Patrick's day they propose to go it
with their fists . awhile- and no
doubt the sun will be obecured for
a day of t we rafter by flying teeth
" and hair,! "The jirice for' seats runs
from $5 to $40.
The cry, that the hold-up will
save money for the state is all rub
bish. The interest alone on the
warrants that will have to be issued
for state expenses in case ofa fail
ure to pass an appropriation bill
will amount to nearly $200,000, the
perpetuation of the useless commis
sions will foot up nearly $100,000
more. The saving to be effected is
the clerk hire and other expenses
of a legislative session, amounting
in. all to probably $50,000. To save
$50,000 they are willing to sacrifice
$300,000 of the people's money.

It seems that Grover Cleveland
never learned the' art of making
money until he was elected Pres
ident. It is a little singular the
other presidents didn't learn it even
then. When Mr. Cleveland was
first elected president he was
worth only about $15,000, but when
he steps down and out on the 4th
of next month he will be worth a
round $6,000,000. That is making
money pretty fast, as his salary as
president eight years amounts to
only $400,000. Grover informs us
that he and his family will make a
trip around the world, starting next
mouth. . .
The Nicaragua canal scheme is
sidetracked for the present, and it
is to be hoped it will stay there un
til some more sensible plan can be
inaugurated thau for the govern
ment to guarantee the payment of
$100,000,000 bonds of a private cor
poration. Had the scheme been
accomplished it would have been a
second addition to the Pacific rail
roads steaL The government
should either build the canal out
right or have nothing to do with it.
Dolph came home to lobby for
his re-election to the senate and
was beaten. Allen add Squire of
Washiugton and Dubois of Idaho
did the same thing and were all
beaten. Mitchell did likewise and
he is almost sure to go up Salt
creek. Legislators have more re
spect for a senator who remains in
Washiugton and attends to his
work, or at least tries to do some
thing to earn their $8000 salaries.
- President McKinley has certain
ly put himself on record as doing a
very commendable deed in request
ing that the proposed $50,000. to be
expended for the inaugural ball be
used to alleviate the sufferings of
the poor. This proves' that our
new president does not go much on
fues and feathers. The less brains
a man has the more desire he has
for. notoriety, pomp and display.
McKinley is all right.
Following is the shortest bill in
troduced jn the legislature: "That
from and after the approval of this
act by the governor, all farm wag
ons or other heavy vehicles upon
which the tire is four inches wide
or more, shall be free from assess
ment and taxation.

has written a letter to the Indus
trial Advocate, in which he declares
that secret revolutionary societies
are being organized in every part of
the country, with their members
leagued together to resort to war as
a means of obtaining "remedies for
the populace" which they cannot
secure bv ballot. '
If it were possible for Senator
Mitchell to get back to Washing
ton before congress adjourns, he
would no doubt advocate with re
newed energy the resolution for an
amendment to the constitution for
the election of senators by a direct
vote of the people. :- It is. believed
that Mitchell , would have been
elected without a doubt by the pop
ular vote of Oregon last June.
The two houses of congress met
in joint session, last week for the
purpose of counting - the electoral
votes of the various states, result
ing as follows: McKinley and Ho
bart, 271 each; Bryan, 176; Scwall
149 and Watson 27. Those having
the least number were elected to
stay at home. ;
A report is being circulated in
Washington D. C, to the effect
that Binger Hermann will be ap
pointed general lund office com
missioner, as soon as President
McKinley gets around to where he
can make appointments. The of
fice mentioned pays $4500,a year.
. A person would scarcely believe
it, until pains had been taken to
count them, says Judge White, that
there are 17,592,186,045,515 differ
ent sounds in the human voice,
but it is true. ' If our readers don't
believe it, count for yourselves.
An experienced publisher never
worries because a man is dissatisfi
ed with something that has appear
ed in the paper. He knows that
the paragraph which offends one
person will in all likelihood please
