THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM
COUNTY. OREGON.
WOULDN'T THIS KILL YOUt
Extract from English history,
When the Revolutionary War
had continued some years, the
British felt that it would be cruelty
to the colonists to maintain it any
longer. The Americans were being
killed constantly, and the country,
from Massachusetts to Sjuth Caro
lina, was filled with widows and
orphans. The Americans, moreover,
were being put to great inconveni
ence. The British Government
notified Washington that it must
be excused from carrying on the
contest any longer. The English
could not reconcile it to their con
sciences to prosecute a strife so fatal
to their kinsmen. So the war was
ended and the Americans were per
mitted to form a government of their
own.
Joseph F. Johnston, just elected
governor of Alabama by 60,000
majority, says: I have distinctly
made the issue that a large majority
cast for our ticket would stengthen
Bryan in the November election
and rid theconntry of a domination
of its finances by millionaires and
syndicates and restore the control
of the government to the men who
are the producers of the wealth in
peace and the defenders of tile flag
in war.
VViu. J. Bryan says: "I don't
want any man to vote for me be
cause he thinks that if I am elected
I will help him to put his hand in
somebody else's pocket. All I ex
pect to do is to prevent somebody
else from putting his hand in your
pocket." The young leader is de
ter mi iied to smash the idea that
there is any taint of Socialism in
the free silver movement. Exam
iner. The last catalogue of the Univer
sity of Oregon shows a remarkable
growth. The State University is
laboring wisely and successfully to
fulfill its high mission to the people
of the state. It may be truly called
the friend of the people. Address
fr information University of Ore
gon, Eugene, Oregon.
The San Francisco Examiner is
authority for the statement that
Wall street has pledged $12,000,000
to defeat Bryan. The occupants of
the Mills building alone subscribed
$1,000,000.
