THE CONDON GLOBE.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1806.
THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM
COUNTY, OREGON.
The haughty CastiliariB, confi
dent of their prowess and ability,
are anxious to go to war with this
country. The Spanish government,
however, wisely hesitates. The
unwelcome truth is that the nation
is practically bankrupt. She al
ready owes, including the Cuban
debt, for which she is responsible,
$1,400,000,000, and is constantly
running behind. The great bank
rs of the world have declined to
lend her any more funds except at
exorbitant rates of interest, and
even so the accommodation will be
limited. It is said the terms are
$100 for every $(J0 loaned. To ' go
to war on a financial basis of this
kind would be the sheerest folly,
and the Spanish governement, more
gravely depressed with a sense of
responsibility than are its hothead
ed subjects anxious for a war with
the United States, prudently hesi
tates. Oregonian.
The London Globe publishes a
long article headed, "American
Communism," concluding as fol
lows: "There is a clear issue be
tween the gold standard allied to
extreme protection and free coinage
coupled with confiscatory socialism.
Whether McKinley or Bryan is
elected, British interests are bound
to suffer. While the victory of
McKinley is certain to harass our
trade with the United States, that
of Bryan could not fail to produce
a financial convulsion which might
shake the Old world to its very
foundation." Come to think about
it, this country isn't bothering itself
much whether our legislation suits
England or not
It is very possible that a senator
ial deadlock will deprive Oregon of
any legislation next year. The
republicans will have about 60
members, and the majority of the
remaining 30 will be p'opulist. The
republican strength will be about
equally divided, and unless they
can get together it will be impossible
to elect. Verily, it begins to look
as though the halls of the senate
will be depopulated through ina
bility of legislatures to elect. It,
however, will have the good effect
of hastening the time when senators
will be elected by the people.
Shortly after his nomination at
Chicago, Candidate Bryan told
Secretary Thomas Maloney, of the
Washington state democratic com
mittee, that be intended making a
campaign tour that would include
every state in the Union. It was
his desire,11 he said, to come through
the Southern states to the coaet,
speaking at Los Angeles, San
Francisco, Portland, Tacoma Seattle
and Spokane. It is not yet known
whether he will visit Condon or not
Twenty-one saloons hare quit
business in Portland during the
last three months, as a result of
hard times. Financial depression
has at least one beneficial effect
It causes temperance. However,
any one having the price of a drink,
need not go dry, as there are 236
saloons still doing business there.
Some methematician has figured
out that in 37,000 years the Niaga
ra falls will cease to exist. We
would advise our readers who are
desirous of seeing the falls to go to
Niagara as soon as possible, so as
not to miss this grand sight before
it disappears forever.
In at least one respect Mr. Cleve
land has made the best record of
any American president. When
he first went to the white house he
was a bachelor; he will leave it
with a wife and at least three
daughters. Who could ask a man
to do more for his country?
