THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM
COUNTY. OREGON.
W.J. BRYAN'S CONVENTION
SPEECH
The Eastern press, In spite of its
opposition to Bryan, is loud in its
praise of bis convention speech.
One special correspondent, to "the
gold bug press," speaks of it as
follows: .
Last of all came Bryan. He
administered the coup de grace to
the rising hopes of the' adherents
of the single standard. He tripped
lightly up the steps of the platform,
as lightly as George Fred Williams
had done on the preceding day.
At he stood before the convention,
pale, njodest and unassuming, he
looked theperfect picture of Samuel
J.Randall (the great Pennsylvania
statesman) a real tribune of the
people. His voice filled the hall,
apparently without effort; his gest
ures were the acme of grace as he
paced backward and forward on
easy familiarity with his hearers.
There was no self-consciousness in
either action or utterance. The
words poured from him in rythmical
volume, burnishing his ideas and
facts until they nhonelike diamond?,
His trophes, similes and metaphors
were marvelous. The whole speech
was irrideecent , The delegates sat
as though enchanted, breaking into
applause at odd moments as though
touched by electric wires. It was
a display of eloquence pure and
ondefiled, something that recalled
the days of Sergeant S. Prentiss, or
of David Paul Brown. Henry Clay
himself could not have created so
great a furor.
I shall not attempt to describe it
Pale and exhausted, but with flash
ing eyes and a smiling face he was
raised to the shoulders of the Ne
braska delegation while the guidons
of three-fourths of the states were
around him. There was an ocean
of applause. While it lasted those
bearing the guidons marched in
procession around the delegates
shouting choruses of satisfaction.
- It was a tribute never before paid
to a living orator. The vote was
taken and the fight was won.
The gold men had made their final
stand and been defeated.

Has any man in Polk County
ever thought of the amount of
money expended for tobacco in the
county? Thousands of dollars are
spent annually for that noxious
weed that might be saved at home
and put in circulation would people
detemine to do so. As good tobacco
can be raised in Polk county as
anywhere in the Southern States
and if farmers would go to raising
it pretty extensively they might
retain more dollars in their pockets,
i The time has come when farmers
roust produce all the necessities of
life that can be ptoduced here, if
they expect to prosper in agriculture

Last Summer one of our grand-children

very speedy relief. We regard it as the
oest meoicine ever put on the market

is the beet medicine ever put on the
market for dysentery, summer complaint
