The ill results of bolting the food
have been attributed to the lack of
thorough mastication, and to the
incomplete action of the saliva up
on the food. Two-thirds of the
food we eat is utarch, and March
cannot be utilized in the system m
food until it has been converted
into sugar, and this change is prin
cipally effected by the ealiya. But
there is a third reason why rapidi
ty, of eating interferes with diges
tion. The presence of salivary se
cretion in the stomach acts as
a stimulus to the secretion of
the gastric juice. Irrespective
of the mechanical function of
the teeth, food which goes into
the stomach incompletely mingled
with saliva passes slowly and im
perfectly through the process of
stomach digestion. Therefore, as
a sanitary maxim of no mean val
ue, teach the children to eat slowly
and in giving this instruction by
example, the teacher aB well as the
pupil may receive a benefit
A farmer in Eastern Pennsylva
nia, has been converted by exper
ience from some common opinions
on money. He did not believe
in banks and be did believe in sil
ver. 80 he held all his funds in
the form of silver dollars, stored
them in a keg marked "prime leaf
lard" and hid the deposit in hie
wagon shed But a thunder shower
came up one day last week and a
baft of lightning took a pernicious
ly active part in the demonstration
of the necessity of one quality in
money. It reduced the wagon
shed to ashes, and the silver dol
lars to a shapeless mass of bullion.
As a result, $1000 or so of silver
was turned into just about half its
face value. Had the coin been of
gold it would be worth just as much
after it wag melted as it 'was before.
This is a highly expensive way of
getting a grasp of the factors of the
monetary problem, but the man
who learns at the cost of $500 a
lesson will be likely to remember

The supreme court of the United
States not long ago sustained the
territorial court of Utah in over
ruling the challenge of a juror who
admitted having read newspaper re
ports of the crime, and that these
had made an impression upon his
mind, but who insisted that this
impression could be removed by
testimony. If this example was
practiced oftener trials would take
up less time and waste less money,
besides in a majority of eases re
sulting in a better verdict than
could be rendered by a jury that
dosen't read and never has opin
ions that are not drammed into it

running at large in Uilliam county, Ore
gon ; and that in 60 days from the date
hereof, it will be unlawful for swine to

ty of $5 for the first ofiense. and $10 for
each and every snbeeqnent offense, to be
recovered irom the owner of tbe swine
by civil action in the name of the State of
Oregon, before a justice of the Dear of
the precinct in which such owner or
keeper or either of them may reside;
and each penalty shall be for tbe bene
fit of. and when collected, naid into
the common school fond of the county
in which such action is brought, within
60 days after each animal is proved to
oe at large.
