It means a system of coinage in
which one silver dollar weighs six-

Iar or, to put it in another way, a ! has preached a sermon on "Cycling from

this country is 16 to 1 and in Eu
rope it is 154 to 1.
We find the following gem going
the rounds of the press, without
credit: "Remember this, young

.suspicions follow her actions. The

before you speak, and remember
that any hog can root up the fairest
flower that ever grew; so the vilest

"Under the provisions of the act
of December 29, 1893, amending
section three of the act of March
29, 1889, the right to make a sec
ond homestead entry may be recog
nized when the first is relinquished
. on account of the arid or unpro
ductive character of the soil, suc
cessive drouths, and consequent
failure of the entrymen to secure a
crop from the land covered by said
entry." This is an important de
cision in view of the fact that many
persons have applied to make a
second entry, but were denied the
privilege under the former ruling.
It is possible that they may now
be able to make such second en'ry
under he decision just at hand.
It has been clearly demonstrated

nia has met with quicker sale than

wools to mix with the fall and

make the latter marketable.
The United States has made a
demand on Spain for $1,500,000, to
aatisfy the Mora claim for damages.
Mr. Mora is an American citizen,
.and during an insurrection in Cuba
his property was confiscated, and

Now, if Spain will pay down the
mount in a reasonable time trouble
may be averted; but if she does
not, some of our lately constructed
war ships may make a cruise around

Rev j. p Brushiughani, of Chicago,
proclaimed the "silent steed" an imple
ment of progress and enlightenment.
He said in part: I wish to be consider
ed an enthusiast npon the moderate nee
of the bicycle. It drives away the ner
vous tension, the hectic cheek, wearied
brain, and peevish temper, renders as
more agreeable to oar friends and ser
viceable to our chosen calling. By the
moderate use of the bicycle the coated
tongue becomes normal once again, re
freshing slumbers and less discrimina
ting appetite are induced, and those
forms of amusement which seem to con
fuse recreation with indoor dissipation
are tabooed. The bicycle has come to
stay. It is the product of evolution in
vehicles. It is a horse that requires no
feeding; it is a servant that requires no
whip or lash and one that requires little
correction. It will make life easier,
work less and enjoyment keener. It
will broaden men because it will bring
men frequently together. The ease with
which it rans entitles it to the name ap
plied to it, "the silent steed," and "sil
ence ie golden" and has been in all ages.
Their Pants Were All Right.
A traveling photogapher set op his
tent in Arlington last week. Five merry
maidens went out for a walk when their
attention was caught by the display of
photographs on the outer wall of his
tent. "Oh, girls let's have our pictures
taken," cried a chubby blonde with
fluffy hair. The suggestion was adopted
and a noisy consultation with the artist
terminated in a decision to be taken after
the manner of those cherubs w bo gaze at
one through a hole in the clouds. The
artistic accessories of the establishment
were limited and the camera manipula
tor was short of clouds. But he was a
man of infinite resources and he prompt
ly improvised the ethereal background
by cutting a slit in a large newspaper,
Through the bole in the paper each of
the five pretty heads was thrust to be
snapped at by the camera. When the
developing process was completed a
horrible discovery was made. The news
paper page had contained a mammoth
advertisment of ready-made clothing,
and there beneath each cherubic counte
nance was the line in large display
type: "All our pants aredouble lined."
