The new census bulleton on pop
ulation informs us that the people
of the United States 62,622,250 in
number are divided between 32,
O(7,80 males and 30,554,370 fe
males. There are thus 1,513,510
forlorn bachelors who are left with
out mates and who are doomed to
a life of agonizing celibacy; and ev
ery girl who s grows up may con
gratulate herself that there is not
only a whole man waiting to es
pouse her, but a fraction of a man
uver. -
This is not the case all over the
country,
In New England and the
middle states of the East, the worn
en slightly predominate. Out of a
total population of 17,401,543, there
are 20,382 more women than men,
so that these 20,000 spinsters must
wither on their stalk, or fall back
on the imported article, which is
one of the few imports the McKin
ley tariff has spared. Perhaps they
may supply the deficiency from the
adjacent states. In the Northwes
tern states, which are called in the
census tables the north central di
vision, there are 214,861 more men
than women, Minnesota, Iowa.
Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas
laving been largely settled by im-
migrant from New England and
Europe, who eitheir had no wives
Qfieft them behind them. And in
the old slave states the dispropor
tion is still more marked, and not
bo easily explained. , In those states
there are 1,364,980 more men than
mi i
women, mis may possiDiy ac
count in some degree for the slow
growth of the negro population.
In our own division of the coun
try, which contains a total popula
tion of 3,027,613, there are 537,439
more men than women. In Cali
fornia the excess of males is 191,
986. And yet we hear girls say
that marriage is going out of fasfi
i n! '
This ought to be the happy hunt
ing ground for the keen-eyed spin
ster. Every girl in California has
a man and a half for her consump
tion, and the proportion holds good
through the other states and terri
tories on the Pacific Slope. Our
girls are troubled by an embarrass
ment of riches. They have so many
men to choose from that they are
fastidious, and while they hesitate
between the two bundles of hay the
buxom New England girl and the
ethereal maiden from New York
a-rid Pennsylvania slips in and re
stores the equilibrium of the sexes.
They had better mend their ways
or they may some day learn what
an Adamlees Eden really means.
Now that G. Cleveland and B.
Harrison are the opposing candi
dates for president this year, it is
the first case in 52 years arid the
third in the history of the govern
ment of a second race between the
same competitors. Thomas Jeffer
son and John Adams were the op
posing candidates in 1796 and 1800,
and Martin Van Buren and Wil
liam Henry Harrison in 1836 and
1840. In both cases the man beaten
in the first , race was successful
in the second. Although urged by
Tammany and other powerful polit
ical factors to express our opinion
on the presidential outlook, the
ItU)bk has treated the invitation
with scorn and contempt. We do
not care to express our views as
to how it will go this year.

Tfiere will fee 444 electoral votes this
year. Last year congress passed a reap
portionment bill, based on the census of
1890, allowing one' member to 173,900
people. A '. .
A content suit has been instituted by
J. M. Huntington against J. B. Crossen
for the clerk's office. Huntington alleg
es that only one ballot box was in sight
at Hood River and that outsiders voted
there ; he also alleges that a large num
ber of votes on which neither the name
of Crossen nor Huntington were erased
were illegally counted for Crossen in the
four precincts of this city, at Antelope,
Bake Oven, Cascade Locks, Hood Kiver,
Baldwin, Mosier, Peschutes, and in fact
in all or nearly every precinct in the
county. As the judges were two to one
republican and were under oath, and as
Mr. Huntington's complaint is also
sworn to, either quite a number of gen
tlemen are frauds, or one is. It will
take a judicial decision to settle it.

kind of stock brings in the $.
Mrs. Helen Bennett, who lives in the
suburb of our "evergreen" city, has the
finest floral and vegetable garden in Gil
liam. (Thanks for the magnificent bou
quet, Mrs. Bennett).
Mr. Wm. Miller and wife took their
departure last week for their former
home in Lane county. During their res
idence here of 18 months, Mr. Miller has
been engaged teaching school, at which
he was very successful. He had the re
fusal of our school at $60 per month.
They have won the entire esteem of our
people, who very much regret their de
