THE GOilDOil GLOBE FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 1392. , THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY. OREGON. The election throughout the coun ty passed off quietly Monday, and unlike under the old law, there was no ticket peddling or bribery. Every man voted hig own ticket, using his own free will. ' At the hour of going to press, the only of fices in doubt are those of circuit judge and member of the state board of equalization. The vote in Wasco, Sherman and Gilliam coun ties, leaves Watkins, Rep., about 1 50 ahead of Brodshaw, Dem., with two democratic counties Crook and Morrow yet : to hear from. Bradshaw's chances are very good, as Crook usually is about 100 dem ocratic, and Morrow about the same. Gilliam county is about 75 repub lican, yet Bradshaw has a majority of 24. There is considerable doubt about the race for member of the state board of equalization, and the contest will be very close. Hughes, Dem., has only 1 majority in this county. . As will be seen by the olHcial count elsewhere, Lucas and Wilcox have overwhelming majori ties, which is 6imply the natural result of efficient public service. The voters throughout the county show from their vote that in these particular contests, party affilia tions were laid aside, politics cut ting no figure whatever. The peo ple expect careful and economical public service, and their vote plain ly shows that they are very well satisfied with the present clerk and sheriff. In the north end of the county, both these candidates go. about their party vote, but ran con considerably ahead in the southern and central portions, Wilcox par ticularly at Fossil his old home. Lucas received his usual vote at Fossil and Mayville. There being no lawyer at Condon, the people in this section have depended almost entirely upon Mr. Lucas to attend to an iana Dusiness. in una as well as in his official capacity, he ' has always been very obliging and accommodating, which accounts for his large vote in this precinct. Sheriff Wilcox has made an ideal officer, and his overwhelming ma jority leavos no doubt as to his ex treme popularity throughout the county. The closest contest of all was for School Supt., Mr. Parker, the present incumbent, merely get tiag m by the skin of his teeth, with a majority of five votes. The other officers elected are all worthy, honorable men also, and will doubt less show their appreciation of the honor bestowed upon them by dis charging their respective duties with credit to themselves and the people.' The democrats are justly proud to have elected four out of the seven or eight contests in the county, especially when it has such a large republican majority. Lack of time and space forbids further comment, An exchange truly says: "The advertisements in a paper are the maps of a large clasB of men's cap abilities in life. The man who con templates doing business in a dis tant town takes up the local paper, and in its advertising columns sees a true picture of the men he has to deal with a complete record of the - tuwnrits : Wmnierce Whome trade, the facilities of store keepers, and in almost every case he can esti mate the character of the men who are soliciting the public patronage. The advertising page is a map of the town, a record of the municipal character, a business confession of the citizens, and instead of being the opinionated production of one man, it is freighted with the life thoughts of a hundred." ; Secretary Blaine has resigned his P"sition in the cabinet, and is now making a determined struggle to get the nomination for president. It makes sure of Harrison's defeat, whether Blaine wins or not. Jim is a sly old coon, and probably is the ablest and shrewdest politician in the world to-day. Binger Hermann, for congress, in the 1st district was elected by a large majority.' W. R. Ellis, in the 2d district has a majority of about 4.i )(a The Australian ballot law neces sitates a slow .count, but then it as sures a free vote, which fully com pensates for the tediousness. Can didates can afford to be kept in sus pense for 24 hours in order that the voters have an unrestricted ballot Arlington Antonatlons. C. A. Shall bought out Newt Harrison this week, and Newt will again sallv forth in search of greener fields and pas tures new. Hon. W. R. Ellis, his wife and child, and half brother, Al Roberts, all went to Heppner Thursday, accompanied by Dr. Geisendorfer. Lester Coffin leased a large band of sheep at Condon this week to R. E. Lindsay, near Mayville. According to the opinion of a certain stockman ( ?) in the county, we ought to give the number of bucks, ewes and wethers. The same rule would apply to speaking about cat tle or horses to give the number of each male and female, instead of simply re ferring to them as , sheep, cattle and horses. Scb. The Goldendale Courier says : "Noth ing show s up a man's little, selfish na ture so well as for him to be always on the alert expecting some one to slight him. Such people never need to look very long until they find what they are looking for. A successful business man is never of that disposition ; it is only the man who is a failure in busi ness as well as a man." A Frontier Wedding. It happened long ago in a Western mining town, says the Detroit Free Press. There wasn't a preacher in the place, and when an exceedingly raw young man and woman desired to get married the services of the police judge were called in. He had never had any experience in that branch of his author ity, but with true western enterprise he agreed to tackle the job. "Stand up," he said, as they seated themselves, and they stood up. "Come forward to the bar of justice," he continued, with a pompous effort, and they came. "Guilty or not guilty?" he asked, as they stood before him holding hands. "Guilty, your honor," responded the groom. Is this your first offense? It is, your honor, so help me. Well, there's nothing to do but impose a life sentence on both of you and assess the groom for the costs. How much, your honor? asked the groom, going down in his pockets. Ten dollars. The groom handed it over. "Case is dismissed," announced the judge, and the innocent young things marched out of the room as radiant as a June morning when the sunlight kisses the roses until they blush again. Ex.
