That's what you think, perhaps,
when you read that the proprietors
of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy offer
500 reward for an incurable case
of Catarrh. Rather unusual, you
think, to find the makers of a medi
cine trying to prove that they be
lieve in it. "There must be some
thing back of it 1
But it's a plain, square offer, made
in good faith. The only thing that's
back of it is the Remedy. It cures
Catarrh in the Head. To its mild,
soothing, cleansing and healing
properties, the worst cases yield,
no matter how bad or of how long
standing. It has a record that
goes back for 25 years. It doesn't
imply relieve it perfectly and
permanently cures. With a Rem
edy like this, the proprietors can
make such an offer and mean it.
To be sure there's risk in it, but
it's 60 very small that they are
willing to take it.
You've "never .beard of anything
like this offer?" True enough.
But then you've never heard of
anything like Dr. Sage's Remedy.
Consumption carries off
many of its victims need
lessly. It can be stopped
sometimes ; sometimes it
cannot.
It is as cruel to raise false
hopes as it is weak to yield
to false fears.

An English Account.
One of New York's fairest and
wealthiest was wn Iking unattended
down a fashionable thoroughfare
when a man whom she did nut know
walked beside her. raised his hat and
spoke to her. Without, a second's hesi
tation the young lady dealt the shiny
and carefully brushed chapenu a right
hander that sent it rolling into the
mud, and planted a left hander between
her Insulter'a eyes that tumbled liiin
fter and on top of his hat Then,
"with rom depicted on her features
and conscious of her own superiority,"
this fair one marched placidly on
amid the applause of a few onlookers,
while the unfortunate individual who
had received such .unexpected chastise
ment picked himself up and Ills bat
tered headgear and slunk away. And
now there is a legion of girls anxious to
attain the ability, and to find an oppor
tunity, of going and doing likewise. 1
"It is just possible that this thrilling
story is only the invention of a pugilist
who takes lady pupils, and who fore
saw what a stimulus the publication of
such a tale would give to his business;
but whether true or not it has in the
words of a feminine aspirant for pu
gilistic honors, "opened the eyes of
woman to the possibility of her being
able to meet man on even terms any
where and everywhere."
"If," says this lady to her associates,
"you are insulted in the street, knock
your insulter down.' No doubt that is
a very right and proper course to take;
but should women become as profi
cient and handy with their fists as
some of them appear to believe is prob
able, it is greatly to be feared that
they will use these fists on very much
less urgent occasions. St James' Ga
zette., A Characteristic Chinese Incident.
There is a small family named Chang,
consisting of a mother and a son of
eleven summers, living in a place north
of Peking called "The Old Tiger Cave."
The old lady was suddenly struck down
with some severe and incurable mala
dy one day and grew worse from day
to day. They were too poor to call in
doctors to give her proper treatment,
and her faithful son, who had constant
ly attended on her, seeing his mother's
severe illness and their abject poverty
and helplessness, took a knife and
sliced off a big piece of flesh from his
thigh, and after invoking the blessing
of heaven boiled and gave it to her as
medicine and food. i
Heaven was so much pleased with
such a child, full of filial piety, that it
granted his earnest prayers, and his
mother, from the day when the human
flesh medicine was administered, rapid
ly recovered, and was up in ten days.
When that medicine was given to her
the boy did not inform her of its com
position until 6he was well, when a big
wound, from which the mixture was
made, was shown her. It is alleged
that the boy suffered no pain or incon
venience from the wound, for heaven
must have relieved hini from the other
wise great pain and bleeding for this
so noble a filial act, which is not to be
found everywhere.
When it waz made known to the
public he was held up as an example of
true and genuine filial piety which was
taught by our Great Sage. The official
of that district will memorialize the
throne to erect a tablet or an arch for
his noble and brave deed in rescuing
his mother from death by endangering
bis own life. Chinese Times.

NERVOUS EXTRAVAGANCE.
Many People Waste Energy That They
Need on Great Occasions.
"Do you know wlmt an Immense amount
of nervous energy people waste continual
ly, which might be Moral upV asked a
physician. "A very nervous peraon is apt
to bave little tricks of manner which she
fancies are a help to her and cover her con
fusion, whereas they are really an injury
and loss. A habit of wriggling in your
chair, of twirling something in your fingers
as you talk, of biting your lips or tapping
on the floor with ypur toot or a hundred
other things, it would be a decided gain to
restrain.
"Very few people realize how rare a
thing it is to ait perfectly still or to do
things composedly without wasting any
effort. An oculist who was examining a
patient's eyes placed a chair and told her
to be seated. Tlieu immediately he asked
her to get up aicuiu. 'Do you know that
there isu't one person in a hundred who
doesn't do that?' he asked. 'Do wbatr
she said, thoroughly mystified. 'Move the
chair when sitting down. You moved it
several inches and I wanted you in exactly
that light.'
"Probably you never noticed this, yet ob
servation confirms it. Now, why should
anybody, having put her chair where she
thinks she wants it, move it In the act of
sitting down It is from a habit of Irreso
lution and nervousness, a failure to do jus.t
what she meant to to make her intention
go straight to the mark. Probably It is
quite unconscious with most people,
"In learning to write or to draw you
learn to steady your baud and draw lines
which Bhal) show no deviation or ragged
ness, but be always correct and firm. It
Is worth while to try to do everything In
the same- way, with no raggedness, no
rambling off.
"But, as every nervous person knows, it
seems almost impossible. You feel that if
you are debarred from 'lotting off steam'
you must go crazy, or jump up or down,
or scream, or do something to horrify or
shock people.
"Well, but try it. Keep perfectly still.
Don't twiddle, your fingers, or shake your
foot, or jerk your shoulder, or Riggle, or
clear yonr throat, or say unmeaning things
because you are afraid to be silent. Keep
it tip minute after minute. You will be
surprised to find how long yon can do it.
"Then, when you cannot stand it any
longer, make your escape and do some of
the violent things you .have in mind. You
will find that you might have hysteria
twice a week or break a window occasion
ally without using up half the nervous
force that would leak out In these little
unsuspected ways," Pittsburg Dispatch.
' Doctoring the Wild Animals.
Hospitals for cats and dogs are quite
common in the large cities, and many a
feline and canine pet has been successfully
nursed through a severe illness by the ex
pert doctors who spend their time in study
ing animal diseases. With the exception
of wounds and injuries, the great majority
of the complaints which the pets suffer
from come as a direct result of too high
living. Sweets, cake, candy and highly
seasoned food will in the course of time
make even the dumb brutes sick, and the
animal doctors frequently find that all
their patients need are a little physic and
plain living. Two weeks of such common
treatment generally restores the pets to
health and strength again.
But of late years the Importations to
this country of wild animals for circuses,
menageries and exhibitions of various
kinds have been so large that there has
sprung up a regular system of doctoring
tor wild animals. Their complaints gen
erally are very few. At first they are
homesick after leaving their forest jun
gles, and they pine away in their cages un
less they are carefully watched. The wilder
and fiercer ones refuse to be consoled, and
they often injure themselvesin their frantie
efforts to break through their iron cage.
Then the heat, change of climate and food
and occasionally old age, bring on com
plaints that must be checked by expert
physicians. New York Epoch.
Afraid of Becoming Famous,
A manuscript reader for a leading maga
zine says: "The magazine with which lam
connected employed a well known female
writer to write up an interesting phase of
life r.lx years ago, for which she was to re
ceive a stipulated sum of money. When
by article was submitted the editor didn't
like it and sent it back, but she fired it
back again, demanding pay, and got it.
The article was pigeonholed, and no one
thought of it again until a short time ago,
when the editor resurrected it and bad it
put in type, forgetting all about its origin.
It appeared in a recent number of tbe
magazine, and was discussed by literary
people as being one of the best written
articles published by the magazine in ques
tion. Tbe editor of another magazine was
attracted by tbe article and wrote to the
lady asking her to submit matter to him.
The writer appears to be a very spirited
young woman, however, and refused to do
so, saying that one experience with a mag
azine editor is enough. She says she will
never write for them again. If she did
she might become famous. She confines
her efforts to newspaper work." New"

A Wonderful Gold Mine.
One of the wonders of Australia, and
one of the greatest natural ouriosities in
the world, is the Mount Morgan gold mine
in Queensland. Tbe precious metal con
tained in this mine, which has paid , a divi
dend of not less than $0,000,000 in a year,
was deposited by a hot spring.
Mount Morgan is a hill about 600 feet
high, containing at its top a cup shaped
deposit made by the hot spring which
once gushed out there, and in this, deposit
tbe gold exists. Truly a cap of Croesus!
Through untold ages tbe waters dropped
their glittering burden, and now man
comes and extracts tbe hoarded metal to
add to the wealth of the world.
Specimens of tbe ore from this strange
mine have been sent to the United States,
that they might be compared with the de
posits of the great hot springs in our own
Yellowstone park. It was but natural to
suppose that the Yellowstone springs bad
also a golden treasure in their cups, but
the most careful search by geologists has
thus far failed to detect any trace of It,
