THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM
COUNTY, OREGON.
THE DUNBAR CASE.
The eutire press throughout the
state is loud in its denunciation of
the outrageous verdict and sentence
imposed upon 0. W. Dunbar, of the
Aoria Town Talk, who is the first
man ever convicted and sentenced
in the state for libel. " Nearly every
paper in the state has had their
say about it, in language similar to
the two clippings below: -
Portland Telegram: Most of the
republican conventions so far held
counties west of here have express- matter with Gov. Pennoyer, of Or
ed a 'desire for the renomination of j egon? He is a good man, and a
' lion. T. A. McBride, present pros
ecuting attorney, and a brother of
Secretary cf State Geo. W. Mc
liride, as their candidate for circuit
judge. This is somewhat signifi
cant, from the fact that the present
judge, F. J, Taylor, does not seem
to be favored for renomination. He
is the judge who sentenced Sandy
Olds to one year's Imprisonment
fur murder, and sent ff poor fellow
who stole two fish to the peniten
tiary for three years. He also sen
tenced an 0. W. Dunbar to a year's
iaiprisoninent for libel. It is pos
sible the judge who tried and sen
tenced Dunbar was prejudiced
ftainst him, on account of severe
fctrictures that had been published
by Dunbar about the judge him-

more severe in his criticism on the
character of an ; innocent witness,
and enjoyed perfect immunity; but
a newspaper editor, where he has a
substantial foundation, cannot let
sunlight shine on the rougues and
swindlers for the benefit of the
community without incurring the
penalty of the. law, Freedom of
the press is an empty sound and a
farce, and in this free country,
whore every man is supposed to be
A(nal, if an editor desires to paint

hire an attorney to do it before a
jury. The latter is above the law,
because it was made by him, and
for his sole benefit. '
Those Americans have honored
