much to .say about it. He was an

the best. He was one ot the

SPELLING CONTESTS
The Washington county spell
ing contest will be a big success
again this year. More than fifty
schools have sent in reports.
Next week we will publish the
names of the ten highest stand
ing of the county. Now is the
time to prepare for the local con
tests, which will be held April 25.
The grand fint.1 will be held at
Hillsboro, May 2.
A Future
It cannot be that earth is
man's only abiding place. It
cannot be that our life is a bub
ble cast by eternity to float a
moment upon its waves and sink
into nothingness. Else why is it
that the high and glorious aspira
tions which leap like angels from
the temple of our hearts are for
ever wandering unsatisfied? Why
it i3 that the rainbow and cloud
come over us with a beauty that
is not of earth; and then pass off
to leave us to muse on their love-
iness? Why is it that the start
which 'hold their festival around
the midnight throne' are set
above the grasp Of our limited
faculties, forever blocking ui
with their unapproachable glory ''
A.nd, finally, why is it thai
bright forms of human beaut)
are presented to our view and
taken from us; leaving the thous
and streams of our affection tt
low back in an Alpine torrenl
upon our hearts: there is ?
realm where the rainbow neve)
fades; where the stars will be
spread out before lis like us like
the islands that 6lumler on the
ocean, and where the. beautnui
beings which pass before us like
shadows will stay forever in oui
presence."
A certain fellow was seer.
tanding on jthe bridge, east oi
town, the other night, singinp
'I stood on the bridge at mid
night" waiting.
