FRED PAPPEL DOES
GOOD WORK
Fred Pappei, who was sight-
watching at Beaverton, Saturday
night, caught Charles Gioleprt,
aged 65, as he was emerging
from the rear of. the J, L. Hardy
confectionery. Pappil had been
engaged by Storekeeper Davis to
watoh that night; , and he made
arrangements with Hardy to use
the front of the store as a back
ground. Between two and three
he heard sonie one )n the" rear oi
the building. The burgularhad
taken a spade and dug a hole un
der the woodshed door of the
main room and chiseled a hole bj
the side of the lock, as the key
waB in the other side of the dooi
and he had no pinchers to turr,
it.Must as he waa about to get
through jnto the; main building,
the freight, enroute to Portland,
pulled in and Pappei heard the
intruder going out the way he
had come in. He hurriedly ran
around the building and caught
the man just as he came out of
the rear. He arrested him and
turned him over to Sheriff
Reeves,. Sunday, and the culprit
is in jail He tcknowledges that
he was in the place, aad says he
is ready to serve time. He had
with him a big. acrew driver, a
skeleton key, and a wire with
skeleton key ends that will un
lock any ordinary lock. He says
he was born at Ft, Wayne, Ind.,
and that he is a . widower. A son
lives at Ft. Wayne, another is a
watchmaker at Elgin, 111., and a
daughter resides at Sheboygan,
Wis. The burglar's kit is enough
to cinch almost any man,, within
itself, but he will take his medi
cine. It is not thought that he
implicated in the Davis store
robbery, but ;this may develope
later. He had been cutting wood
down at the Johnson place, near

TRIP
BOYS ARRIVE HOME
Arnold Clausen and Charles
Carlson arrived from a trip of
the North West the other even
ing, after having rather an ex
citing "trip abroad" they took
the "Owl train" from Portland
for Aberdeen, here Charlie got a
job in one of those big sawmills
and Arnold gets a position in the
"Cook house" . this combination
was "ace high" for Carlson
would work hard in thi mill all
day and Clausen would have a
"four story dinner" ready for
his pal, they say Aberdeen is 8
regular frontier town, full of
Sawmills, loggers, shrewd busin
38S men and plenty of money,
some of the biggest sawmills in
the World. Next they traveled to
Tacoma, the City that has "beer.
growing" here they saw some
beautiful scenery, it is a beauti
ful city with its great stadium,
one of the wonders of trie West,
while in. Olympia there wasn't
'much doing" they took the boat
to Seattle, ope of the first things
that came m view was the big
docks which "loomed up" a?
they came uo me Sound. In their
trip "around the town" business
was good and to talk with Gome
of those fellows, they thought
they were in the Garden of Eden
how they do "boost up there"
some of their famous Seattle
Spirit If they could only found
some empty bottles to bring a lit
tle of that stuff home and turned
it loose in Beaverton? Seattle is
a great city full of energetic Citi
zens pulling together, with big
University, Cigar Box base ball
park, they have jquite a fight in
regard to the name of Mt. Rain
eras it is called in Seattle and
Mt. Tacoma in Tacoma. They
soon got tired walking around
town for the streets are so steep
that people could travel faster,
if some genius would come along
and substitute elevators for the
electric cars. From Seattle the
boys went to a big Govt. Irrigat
ing project Meadow Creek wherf
a bia dam is being built' There
were no tricks played except
somebody put a pig tail in Claus-
sen's grip and he ' didn't find it
until he arrived home, if they
had went over the line into Can
ada, they might have got him fcr
smuggling pork. They say it was
a daisy trip and best looking
people they saw on the whole
journey, were in Seattle, who
were the prettiest in the World
except those who live in Oregon.
Mrs Booker has been called to
Seattle to meet her brother en
route to Canada. Mrs Booker's
departure i3 greatly regretted by
her many sincere friends.
