SEVEN INQUIRIES ON TAPIS
Estimated Cost of Investigations
Placed at Over $100,000.
nasmngxon, u. c An era oi in
vestigation probably unprecedented in
the history of the house will be ush
ered in when congress reassembles in
January. Members of the house will
divide then- attention among seven
distinct investigations scheduled to be
gin immediately after the holidays.
They are :
Inquiry into the so-called money
trust; hearings before the ways and
means committee preliminary to tariff
revision by the next congress; the
probe into the New Haven-Grand
Trunk railroad in New England: the
grand jury's hearings on general trust
legislation; the inquiry into the rami
fixations of Jthe so-called foreign, and
domestic shipping trust by the mer
chant marine committee; the Glass
subcommittee's investigation incident
to the framing of a currency bill, and
the inquisition into the affairs of the
office of superintendent of insurance
in the District of Columbia, with tes
timony to be taken not only in Wash
ington, but also probably in New
York.
The insurance inquiry will begin
with the District of Columbia commis
sioners on the witness stand.
These committees will endeavor to
complete their work by the end of the
session. It is estimated the investi
gations will cost in the aggregate
more than $100,000.
FANATIC HijRLS BOMB AT
NEW VICEROY OF INDIA
Delhi, India Baron and Baroness
Hardinge, viceroy and vicereine of
India, narrowly escaped assassination
by a native fanatic while making their
ceremonial entry into Delhi, the new
imperial capital of India.
The splinters of the powerful bomb,
which killed one native attendant and
injured another, penetrated the back
and shoulders of the viceroy and he
was also wounded in the neck by the
screws with which the bomb was filled
and which passed through his helmet.
The doctors who removed the metal
splinters from the wounds declared it
was marvelous that the viceroy es
caped fatal injuries.
Lady Hardinge immediately after
the explosion asked her husband if he
was hurt. He replied: "I am all
right. Goon."
Lady Hardinge then said:
"We cannot. There is a dead man
behind."
The elephant on which they were
riding halted and the viceroy tried to
stand up, but reeled and fainted and
the officials who gathered around had
much difficulty in removing him from
the elephant's back. The howdah in
which he and Lady Hardinge had been
seated was blown to matchwood.
Wilson Somewhat Fagged Out,
Princeton, N. J. "I feel like a
squeezed sponge," exclaimed Presi
dentelect Wilson when he returned
home after an all day's session in
Trenton with the state board of par
dons, over which, as governor, he
presided.
uovernor wuson s attention was
called to the recent discussion of par
don systems in Arkansas and other
states, and he was asked whether he
preferred that the state executive
have full responsibility or that the
pardoning power be lodged in a board
consisting, as in New Jersey, of the
governor and the chancellor and six
judges from the court of errors and
appeals. Though the governor has
the power of vetoing any application,
his affirmative counts no more than
that of the other members.
"I like the New Jersey system bet
ter," said Mr. Wilson. "I admire
verr much this court, as it is open
minded and certain to do the right
thing."
Motive for Attack Mystry.
London The motive for the attempt
on the life of Baron Hardinge, viceroy
of India, is a mystery on which it will
be impossible to hazard a guess until
t is known whether the miscreant is a
Hindu or a Mussulman. It is not
known whether the bomb-thrower has
been arrested. Intense indignation is
expressed in Calcutta and here over
the incident. Fears are expressed
that it may have been a manifestation
of Moslem resentment at the British
occupancy of the ancient Mohammedan
capital of India.
Fight by Shoe Trust Starts.
Washington, D. C Solicitor-Gen
eral Bullett filed with the Supreme
court the government's bi ief asking
for the reversal of the decision of the
Massachusetts Federal court dismiss
ing four of the five counts in the in
dictments returned under the Sherman
anti-trust law against the United Shoe
Machinery company. This brief
marks the opening of the legal fight
over the criminal prosecution of the
alleged trust.
For "Non-Partisan" Commission.
Washington, D. C. Senator Poin-
dexter, of Washington, after refusing
to give regard to the reports of the old
tariff board when the various tariff
bills were under consideration in the
senate last session, has now prepared
and will introduce a bill creating what
he terms a "nonpartisan, high-class
Federal tariff commission."

HAWAII MAKES
GREAT STRIDES
Governor of Islands Reports
Progress and Prosperity.
Commerce, ' Homesteading, Trans
portation, Public Works,
Health, Etc., Improve.
Washington, D. C. Hawaii has en
joyed greater prosperity and progress
during the last vear than during any
other in its history, according to Gov
ernor Frear's annual report, submitted
to the Secretary of the Interior Fish
er. The preceding four years had
been notable for their prosperity, says
the governor, but this year witnessed
even greater strides forward.
In commerce, homesteading, im
provement in class of immigrants, bet
terment of transportation facilities,
construction of public works, public
health, administration and public
school facilities there had been
marked advance.
That the United States reclamation
act be exended to Hawaii is one of the
governor's recommendations. He
says there are large areas which
should be made available by irrigation
for settlement by Americans in colon
ies of considerable size.
Imports and exports of the islands
during the lyear totalled $84,100,000,
an increase of $14,680,000 over the
preceding year. The increase was
chiefly in trade with the United
States, which constituted more than
nine-tenths of the total. The increase
in exports from the territory was 12
times as much as that in the imports,
being $13,500,000 against $1,180,000
The exports totalled $55,400,000; the
imports,' $28,700,000.
Governor Frear reports that the
percentage of homesteads taken by
Americans and other Caucasians has
been much larger this year than
usual."
During the last two years the de
parture of Japanese steerage passen
gers exceeded the arrivals by 489.
PRESIDENT-ELECT AT HOME
Staunton, Virginia, Gives Noisy
Welcome to Wilson.
Staunton, Va. Virginia enthusias
tically welcomed home Governor Wil
son, the eighth of her native sons to
be chosen president of the United
States. From the moment the presi
dent-elect crossed the state line at
Alexandria in the afternoon, after he
had a ten-minute glimpse of the na
tional capital, until 9 o'clock, when he
reached the little parsonage where he
was born 56 years before, the recep
tion was one of great enthusiasm,
noisy demonstration and spectacular
display.
Escorted by cavalry, militia com
panies and a torchlight procession, the
governor and Mrs. Wilson motored
through the streets of Staunton to the
home of Rev. A. N. Frazer, pastor of
the Presbyterian church. In this
home Rev. Joseph R. Wilson, father
of the president-elect, lived in 1856.
"It is fine to be back again, ex
claimed the president-elect, as he
stepped indoors.
Suffering from the effects of his
cold, he returned immediately to the
room in which he was born to rest.
Staunton was not alone in celebrat
ing the arrival of the distinguished
visitor. Fireworks shot across the
skies and red lights threw a festive
glare at all stations along the route.
Mrs. Wilson stood with her husband
on the rear platform of the train and
enjoyed the demonstration.
Soldier of Fortune Dead.
Reno, Nev. With both hands cut
off and his skull fractured, Max Von
Buelow, said to be a descendant of
Count Von Buelow, the famous Ger
man general, was picked up on the
railroad track near the state line and
died two hours later in the railroad
hospital at Sparks. Von Buelow was
a globetrotter and soldier of fortune.
Several years ago he married Miss
Christine Plummer, a wealthy wo
man of Pueblo, Colo., and they trav
eled through Europe in regal style.
Von Buelow was highly educated.
Simple Ceremony Preferred.
Washington, D. C. Inauguration
ceremonies in the past have been too
spectacular and pretentious, in the
opinion of President-elect Woodrow
Wilson. Governor Wilson talked with
William Corcoran Eustis, recently
chosen chairman of the inauguration
committee. "The thing has been
overdone in the past," said the gover
nor to him. "I wish you would have
the ceremonies as simple as may be
consistent with dignity and order."
Snow Filers Quit Work.
New York Three thousand snow
pilers and truck drivers employed in
removing snow and ice from the
streets of New York City quit work as
a result of the rainfall. The men
'simply couldn't stand the rain," ac
cording to reports received at the
office of the street commissioner.
Beef Cattle Are Scarce.
Chicago Fewer cattle by 281,298
have been received at the Chicago
stockyards this year than in 1911, ac
cording to figures given out here.
Despite this fact, more money was
paid for beef in 1912 than in 19 il by
$3,282,735. The total paid out this
year was $183,488,909.

Indexing Extraordinary,
Indexers have been responsible for
many errors, but possibly the strang
est example of curious indexing oc
curs in a law book. Turning over Its
index, a correspondent of the London
Chronicle noted the entry: "Best, Mr.
Justice, His Great Mind," and refer
ence to the page brought this: "Mr.
Justice Best said be had a great mind
to commit the witness for contempt
of court."
