Washington County Pomona Grange
convened with Washington Grange
- near North Plains in the Pumpkin
Ridge diitrict. I
Despite the bad condition of the
roads goodly number of automo
biles climbed the long bill to the
Orange hall, and deposited a crowd
of enthusiastic Grangers. ' '
Representatives were there from
Leedy, HUlibora, Sherwood Wash
ington and Beaverton Granges.
: Those attending from Beaverton
were Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Barnes,
Mrs. H. 0. Stipe, Mrs. E. E Sweh
son, Mrs. J. E. Davis, Mrs. P. C.

eral are going to take it.
Wo have two post graduate stu
dents enrolled for special - work.
Roy .Emmons and .Oscar Nash.
There are also two new students,
. Kate Taylor and Margaret East
land. This brings the total enroll
ment to 92. Well get one hundred
yet.
The students are happy this week
for this is Institute week. We have
three days' vacation beginning Wed
nesday. ,
The first six weeks of school
closed with examinations last Fri
day. Students got their grades on
Tuesday, It is noticed that many
five-subject students are now drop
ping to four subjects voluntarily
Mrs. Suttle, who leads the Boys'
, and GirlB clubs, is a very capable
instructor. She is liked very much
by the students. , ' . (
. John A. Stanfleld
' John A. Stanfield, father of R. C.
Stanfield, underwent an operation
in a Portland hospital two weeks
iigo an died from the effects of the
operation there Wednesday and was
- buried Thursday at the Riverside
park cemetery. He was 66 years of
age.
Mr. Stanfield made the acquaint
ance of many Eea-jortcn people
while Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Stanfield
were incharge of the local telephone
exchange. He was visiting his son
and family when the operation be
came necessary. .':.(
Surprise Party
A surprise was tendered Mr. and
Mrs. Geo. Newman last Tuesday ev
ening by a number of their friends.
Games and music filled the evening
: and delicious luncheon was served.

Few Forest Grora people realise
that in, the short time the Oregon
Growers' Packing Corporation has
been in existence as a Forest Grove
industry that it has extended the
market for local fruits half way
around the world, but such is the
.-aae. Last week three carloads of
fine Jonathan and Grimes' Golden
apples vere shipped out of tho local
plant Two of these went to Tulsa,
Oklahoma and the third went to New
York. This season a total of ten or
more cars of apples will be shipped.
Already this week the third car
has gone forth to Tulsa and before
the week is gone a carload will be in
transit for Astoria, Oregon and one
will be on its way to Santa Barbara
California.
Manager Van Laanen hopes to
get the prune processor Btarted next
week. He is grading prunes now and
finds them of fine quality, although
slightly smaller than last year's crop.

Former Cltisea Strikes Gold
A. E. Story has been enjoying a
week's vacation. Dart of which
spent with Mr. and Mrs. Robinette
at 'Leland, Ore. He reports that
Mr. Robinette. who was "onnerly
operator at the S. P. station her
and now aicent for the same com
pany at Leland, has become greatly
interested in placer mining. Wniie
owning a one-quarter interest in
one chiim he has leased another
large mine, which has been idle for
some time and from which, with the
methods he Intends to use expects
to reap large rewards.
Mr. Story says that while there
they paid a visit to the mine and
washed two pans of dirt taken at
random from the old working and
obtained an estimated value of 26c
to the pan, but larger values have
been obtained from the newer pros
pect holes. ,
Mr. and Mrs. R, C. Stanfield,
who have had charge of the local
telephone exchange for several
months, ars now at Council, Idaho,
where Mr. Stanfield has a position
as station agent. They-' were suc
ceeded in the local exchange by Mr.
and Mrs, Massey.
