SECOND CHICAGO CONVENTION
The organization of a new party at
Chicago will not be a repetition of
the 1912 fiasco. The conditions that
surround its formation are entirely
different. Then it was a man, revolt
ing asrainst the uniust, or seeming
unjust act of his party in convention
assembled. The principle at stake
at that time was whether gag rule
and bossism could run a political par
ty and get away with it. The bosses
and the party lost and the Democrats
secured the spoils of a campaign that
they could not otherwise have won.
Today it is a different issue. It is
an , attempt of the disgruntled and
dissatisfied elements of both parties
to capitalize the radical elements of
the labor parties and secure concess
ions from which ever party can be in
timidated. With them are a few able
and earnest progressives who are out
of touch with the old parties and per
haps honestly think that they can
mold the uncohesive mass of radicals
into something of solidity. But their
efforts will be in vain. The majority
ot the gathering at Chicago are rad
icals. Radicals are visionary. There
will be a hundred binds of dreams
and the only kind of dream which can
draw a following is the dream which
comes true, which materializes and
can be made to produce.
The new party has but one chance
of success. That is for both of the old
parties to make fatal mistakes. Both
of the old parties have made fatal
mistakes in the past, but both have
never made the fatal mistake the
same year in the past and it is not
probable that both will make a fatal
blunder this year.
SINGLE TAX EXPERIMENTS
California and Oregon are doomed
to be nrade the field for single tax
experiments with each recurrim?

so long as the trust created by the

gle Tax go on the ballot.
It would seem after a radical and
revolutionary taxation reform has
been voted down with increasing ma
jorities, it might be dropped
But not so. By a new wrinkle the
people are offered "partial Single
Tax" to go iato effect piecemeal,
the first slice to be taken in 1925.
The firm and conservative charac
ter of the people of western states
will again reject the iSinale Land
bills up for a vote in November. The

FARMERS MUST PREPARE TO
STORE GRAIN

other cause for rejoicing on the part
ot tne larmer is the highly improved
labor situation. From ' nearly all
districts come reports of adequate
farm labor for harvesting the large
crops with urgent demands for food
stuffs.
A note of optimism adds to the
joy oi lite for our greatest citizen,
the American farmer. But it is only
good common horse sense to look
ahead and prepare for difficulties
wnicn may arise before the crop is
marketed.
The only visible cloud on the hori
zon is the transportation situation.
The railroads are deplorably in need
ol equipment, f urther, congestion,
due largely to strikes, oast and pres
ent, not only of railroad employees,
but of longsoremen, truck drivers,
etc., has tied up large quantities of
cars.
The car building companies of the
country have on order for the rail
roads, 43,000 cars. Few of these" Will
be delivered in time to help in the
grain movement. There is a short
age of at least 260,000 ears.
Farmers must consider the tempo
rary storage of grain. Because of
high cost of lacks and handling, the
sacking of grain is rapidly being done
away with.
Terminals, elevators, railroad
equipment, etc., ore equipped for bulk
handling of grain. Progressive far
mers, either already have or are now
pngaring to handle their grain in
To aid the farmer in economically
equipping himself with temporary
bulk storage the bureau of markets
of the U. S. government, has, after
a detailed study of the fanner's needB,
prepared plans for a temporary
grain bin which may be built for var
iocs capacities.
These grain bins are movable and
ao simple of construction that any
farmer with the ordinary tools on
the farm can build one in a day with
out skilled help. The material can
be purchased at any retail lumber
yard and can be paid for out of the
saving on sacks of the first season.
The U. S. government bureau of
markets or the nearest lumber yard
vill furnish plans free of charge,
showing the construction of one of
these binns. These cuts and accom
panying explanations are so simple
and explicit that it is not necessary
for the builder to be able to read a
blue print in order to construct his
grain bin according to government
