SAFE FOR DEMOCRACY

a log at the edge of the lake sat Gov

young lady from the east bathing
her dainty feet in the cold waters of
the blue, blue lake.' Her shoes and
stockings were on the bank. After
she had satisfied her bathing procliv-

walk over the : sand to get them.
Turning to the mayor, whom she

BY WAY OF A CHANGE
It is a noteworthy fact that when
we hear tirades against the high cost
of living, with coeent reasons for re
ducing it immediately, the commodity
to which persistent reference is made
is food. .
The high cost of furniture, or tools,
or cooking utensils, or soai, or bed
steads, or miscellaneous hardwan, or
even house rent, we" hear little about.
But it is food all the time and then
perhaps, leather or wool. Sometimes
the leather and wool aro referred to
as shoes and clothes, but generally
the reference is made to the raw ma
terials. . ,
It seems more than a coincidence
that the articles which must be cheap
ened are principally those which the
farmer sells. Those which he buys,
apparently, may remain at their pres
ent figure. -
The demonstrations and indigna
tion meetings for which our eloquent
spellbinders and their friends hire
halls are not attended by members of
farm laborers' unions because there
aren't any farm labor unions. But

vure that farmers buy, and other op

When President Wilson shook hands
the other day with Mrs. H. W. Som
ers, wife of General Somera of Civil
war fame, he was the twentieth ex
ecutive of the United States to whom
she had been introduced. Mrs. Som
ers made her debut at the White
House on the arm of Daniel Webster,
when, William Harrison was presi
dent. The aged lady declares that
since that time she has attended
many of the social functions given
by presidents and that she was inti
mately acquainted with many of the
executives. . Washington has been her
home for 90 years. Despite her ad
vanced age she is very active and in
