State Engineers Tackle Water
Survey of Hood River Valley
Hood River. Khea Luper, engineer
tor the state water board, assisUd by
Fred Coshow and Malcolm Button, has
begun the fonr months' tank ot mak-
ing a survey of the enure area ot the
Hood River valley tinder the ditches
of Irrigation systems or that may be
irrigated. . During the next week H.-K.
Donnelly, another engineer of the wa
ter board, accompanied by R. C. Ingar
ham, wilr arrive here to assist in the
task. George T. Cochran, of La
Grande, eastern Oregon water super
intendent, was here Saturday to in
spect the initial work of the engineer.
The work of the water board aaa
been undertaken here for the purpose
ot adjudicating the water rlghta of
the entire Hood River watershed. The
task waa initiated recently, when the
supreme court, remanding a neoiaioo
ot Circuit Jndga Bradahaw In the case
of the Oregon Lumber company vs.
the Bast Fork Irrigation District re
ferred the caae to tbe water board.

Salem. Traffic flrures compiled un
der the direction of the state highway
department show that in 80 days end
ing at 6:80 A. M. October 10, (1,001
automobiles, 18,868 motorcycles, bicy
cles and pedestrians, 10,897 horse
drawn vehicles, and 129 head ot stock
crossed the bridge over the Willam
ette river at Salem. The dally aver
age of traffic over tbe bridge was:
700 automobiles. 4(2 motorcycles, bi
cycles and pedestrians, 841 horse-
drawn vehicles, and si neau oi atocx.
The maximum of tratflo occurred on
Portland day during the recent atata
fair, when 1570 automobiles crossed
tbe bridge. .
Prunee H0 a Hundred.
Roseburg. The highest price paid
for prunes In Douglas county this sea
son was record fid here Wednesday,
when Rush Clark, a Millwood rancher,
sold his entire crop at 10.40 per hun
dred pounds, orchard run. Mr. Clark
had about 10,000 pounds ot prunes.
Practically all ot the prunes grown
in Douglas county have been sold and
the local packing plants are working
to their full capacity. Thla year's
crop is said to be the heaviest In the
history of the county.

' WOO Cars are Lacking.
Salem. All teoorda for car shortage
on the Portland division of the South
ern Pacific company's Unas were bro
ken when reports to the Oregon Pub
lic Service commission showed the
company 1000 cars short ot its orders.
The company reported that It had re
ceived orders for 2225 ears, and tkat
826 cars were available. A total of 71
empty freight cars were reported to
have arrived at Ashland In 24 hours.
