Sitting behind the ban, held m a special cell, Bennett Thomp son the, suspected murderer, is the magnet which draws crowds of the curious to the sheriff's office to view him as he sits in his narrow eell, playing solitaire. One at a time, very often in a crowd of five or six, among them many women, request permission to view the prisoner and through I the bars they gazed open mouth ed much as the bewhiskered gen tleman from the back country would gaze at the bearded lady or the wild man from the depths of Borneo. Cool, possessed, and seemingly unconcerned over the horrible accusation which shines from every curious eye, he hard ly notices the visitors as tiiey come and go. Now and then, without raising his head or eemingly to turn from his game, his shifty eyes turn quickly in their sockets and he surveys those gathered before the doors. A direct look he very seldom re- turns, nor will he speak with a stranger. To one watching him continually he has the appear ance of being by far to self pos-. I. Too cool for a mar. ac cused of the fiendish crime which is laid to him. Thus the amateur would declare that he is un-. doubtedly the man. Yet there is doubt in the minds of the offi cials which time does not dispel, and only after it has been proved that Thompson can operate a machine and the object which rushed' in the skull of Fred Ristman' has been found, will the authorities be able to say for sure whether they have the right man or not. - 5 ' p c::::lv:: Sm'JS Roevei. Although the finding of the remains of Fred Ristman, the driver of the jitney which car ried the killer to his work, has cleared Up a big part of the mys tery, there still remains much to uncover and the authorities of two county are doing their lev- evel best to solve the problem, 'i! With out them the ease is a weak one and as it now stands all evidence gathered is of a purely circum stantial nature. The first point to be solved is whether or not Thompson could drive a machine and secondly the instrument with which the killing of the jitney driver was accomplished must be found. A continued search for the lat ter has been going on for several days which has resulted in the finding of nothing except some auto parts' hidden in the woods near the spot where the lap robe and hat were' found". Among the things was found the number plate, the only one wh'ich had been removed from the auto. . The answer '; is easy. Because Mr. Reeves refused to open his soul for their inspection and give out for publication all his domestic troubles, these pin headed, near sighted, pieces of humanity be gan to take sweet revenge by publishing statements which were altogether misleading and otherwise attempted to show Mr, Reeves up. But despite all that has been said Mr. Reeves must be given credit for doing excel lent work in handling and run ning down violators of the law.
