All that medical science and lov
ing hands could do was done to
save her life, but to no avail.
Funeral services were held at the

PIANO RECITAL

A very interesting recital was given
last Friday evening in the Grange hall by
Miss Lillian Elder's music class, compos
ed of nine irls and two young ladies.
The performance was. 'a great, success,
and the musical ability is a credit to Beav-'
erton. The chief performers were Misses.
Caraa Peterson and Thesta Pegg, two of
the youngest in the class. The duet thev
played was exceptionally well rendered
lor students so young.
The two young ladies, Misjsss Ruth
Caldwell and Pirle Denny, rendered
each a duet and a solo, which were very
creditable additions'to the evening. All
the other pupils dui excellently consider
ing the length of time, they have been
taking lessons. .

out the afternoon and everting

ment was given. The work done
by the performers showed care
ful training and a great amount
of planning. Following the en
tertainment were games and' a

evening, and the crowd dispersed
about . 10 p'clock. The total
amount of cash collected in was
about $80. -

interest was aroused by the re
ceipt of a Christmas tuberculosis
starnp on a letter from Norway.
He published an article about
this queer looking stamp in the
Outlook and suggested, some pos
sible uses for it in this country.
Miss Bissell at once saw ah op
portunity here and prepared a
stamp, fron) the sale of which
her society realized $3,000 for
tuberulosis work. So impressed
wes she'wfth this success that
she induced the American Redj
Cross to take up the sale in 1898
on a national basis. With very
little organization Dnd with hard
ly an attempt at careful advertis
ing the sale that year brought in
over $135,000 for antitubercu
losis work in various parts of the
United Btates. In 1909, with
more thorough organization, the
sale increased to $230,000, in 1910
to nearly $310,000, in 1911 to over
$330,000, and in 19ia to over
$400,000. In 1913 the sale was
increased to nearly $450,000, and
last year, in spite of war and
hard times, H2 per cent more, or
55,000,000 seals were sold, total
ing $550,000 for the anti-tuberculosis
war.
It is fitting to note that war,
inhuman and cruel, was the
mother of the Red Cross seal,
and that now war for humanity
against disease brings it back to
its fullest uselumess.
